Hi folks. Glad to finally have an internet provider that is compatible with bladeforums. Some of the other forums I've been on do not seem to get as much reaction or discussion, so, glad to be here.

This is my latest Buck acquisition. Some of you may have seen it on another forum I recently posted on, but I thought I'd post it here since there seems to be alot of serious Buck collectors. I know I've been enjoying some great knife pics many of you have posted.

My first Buck knives were purchased from the old Gander Mountain catalogs around the early to mid 80s. Pants were tight, and the job called for a small pocket knife. My first was a Lancer, then an Executive and Knight. I always drooled over the MOP Ultima 507 in the catalogs, but it always seemed a little pricey for a work knife.

After the turn of the century, I saw them on ebay, all nice and perfect with papers and box, for anywhere from $100 to $200, and it still seems a little too pricey. Some even have the yellow tinted pearl, which I do not care for.

So I finally found a good deal on a used one with no box or papers for a decent price. The negatives - It has some normal pocket wear & one small ding on the edge of the pearl scale. The mirror polished blade has some scratches from use that I think I can sand out.

On the positive side, it's an early one with the old Buck logo. The blade seems to have been sharpened very little and is all there. The MOP scales have great color. One is all nice white, and the other has very slight pink and green rainbow effects at the edges near the bolsters, and no ugly grain lines or yellow pearl.

Here are a few pics, for the Buck fans. I think the bolsters will polish up nicely also. Either way, I love it, and will use it for occasional carry in the dress pants, etc.

Please post pics of your Ultima if you have one.

Very nice , i think i mite treat my self.
Seem to be treating myself everyday damn buck fever !

guitar, Yes, the 507 Ultima I was a real dressy model and usually pricey. It was brought out in 1980 and didn't last so long.
However, Buck never put a logo on it. It came with the old English script stamp and over all mirror polish. Glad you have one in your collection as they're not easy to find. I've not seen the black that Haebbie shows. Fantastic! Buck offered different models across the puddle. DM

Thank you, David. The Black Pearl is one of the prettiest knives I have.
But no, it was not offered across the big pond. I bought it in the United States.

Haebbie, I noticed yours has the block lettered stamp and guitar's the old English script. Great find. DM

Yes, David, and the shown Golden Pearl has block letters too.
All of them came in the Ultima I clam shell. But I don't know if it
is the original packing.

This thread made me curious about the one I have, so I took a look at the blade stamp.

3-liner in Block letters: BUCK, 507 >, USA. A 1987 vintage.

That is a GREAT set Haebbie. I didn't know they had been made in gold lip and black pearl. From what I understand, gold lip has become VERY obscure of late and quality ("presentation") grade supplies are scarce!

CONGRATS on your score guitar!

Thank you, Peter. I found in the BF, that Buck made a lot more Gold Lip Ultimas
then black ones. But I don't know nothing about pearl. What I know is:
The Black Pearl has artificial scales.

That is odd that Buck used imitation pearl on the black model.

Pearl is a favorite material and there are MANY knives with plastic/synthetic materials that look VERY much like the real thing.

There are various ways to determine the fake from real, some being destructive. Those that work with it a lot, can tell easily by looking at it. A basic but pretty good test (if possible/practical) is to rub it across your tooth. Pearl feels very different than plastic. Sort of rough or grainy.

Thanks for the replies guys. Yes, those are beautiful Haeb. I never even knew the black ones and gold ones even existed. Very nice.

Your welcome. Hae, The clamshell box you show with the velvet sleeve is original. Which is great because one or the other usually gets lost by the time a collector gets his hands on it. DM

Nice 507 guitar, nice to see another enthusiast in the Burg. You can send that back to Buck and they will buff out the bolsters and polish the blade. I dont know what can be done about the dinged MOP, but you never know. It costs a whopping $7 and it include the return shipping.

Welcome to the forum.

Hey thanks Fritz. That sounds like a pretty good idea. I knew that Buck would sharpen the blade for a small fee, but I didn't know they'd polish the blade and bolsters too. I think I'll look into that for sure, because I know they'd do a better job than I would by hand.

The ding in the MOP is the size of a pencil point, so I'm not too worried about that, but other than that, it should polish up like new.

I'd like to say what a great job the Buck service & warranty department did for me. I got the Ultima back, and it looks brand new. I got this knife cheap because it was so rough. They even got the nick and pocket change scratches out of the MOP. Definitely got my $6.95 worth.

Also got back my 503 warranty job back. New spring and it now snaps shut properly. Sharpened too. Excellent service from Buck.

That's fantastic G1580,

It looks like it just came out of the factory box! Love the color in your MOP scales.
