Executive summary: What a knife! GREAT JOB in this one, Spyderco!

Just received my Paramilitary 2 this morning, from New Graham (Annie is a pleasure to deal with - a true gem).

My observations are:
- This is still a Paramilitary, with its distinctive shape. Good!
- Blade is very sharp out of the box, with a thoothy edge.
- The G10 is my favorite Spyderco kind; very grippy but not aggressive. Handle edges are nicely rounded.
- Blade is not perfectly centered, but it does not touch the handle. The screws are well tightened.
- Very slight horizontal blade play, no vertical blade play.
- Very smooth action...like "Sebenza" smooth. The ball detent, located on the lock bar, keeps the knife closed securely.
- Nice nested liners (they look thick and tough), with large holes machined in them to reduce weight.
- Comfy handle, no hot spot for me, and a nicely sized finger choil. My thumb sith comfortably on the ramp. Ergo is spot on.
- Nice jimping on the thumb ramp and choil; very grippy without being uncomfortable on longer use (more testing on that in the upcoming days).
- Nice shiny clip (I like), rounded edges, holds the knife securely in my jeans.
- The clip is positioned tip down. I'll try changing it to tip up, just to see what the pocket real estate looks like. I normally prefer tip up; we'll see.
- With the clip tip down, enough knife sticks out of my pocket to easily pintch it out with the help of the clip screws. Excellent.
- Blade spine is nicely squared and works very well stricking my firesteel. This is important for me if I plan on carrying it in the woods.
- Exactly the size I like (4.75" closed, 8.25" opened), same size as the large Sebenza, a tad bigger than the Griptilian.
- Some more numbers: 0.1445" blade thickness on the micrometer. 0.457 handle thickness. 3.7 oz on my postal scale (106 gr). 14mm hole.
- Steel is CPM S30V; I wonder what's the hardness is on this one? I'll see how the edge hold up to normal use (whittling wood, kitchen, edc duty) in the next week or so.
- Screws torx size: T6 for the clip, T8 for the handle, T10 for the pivot.
- Both Sal and Eric signature logos on the blade; how nice is that!
- Best of all: $106. Are you freakin' kidding me? Best bang for your buck bar none!

Summary: What a knife! GREAT JOB in this one, Spyderco! :D

Enough jabbering; picture time!

Good stuff! Received mine last week, with the wee bit of extra blade length it just seems complete.

That looks great!

did you tighten the piviot to help reduce the vertical blade play?

This is still a Paramilitary

Very much so. When I received mine, I thought for a moment that NG had sent me a Para 1. Then I saw the big lanyard tube, and so forth.

Oh, and get yourself an 18650 body for that Quark. Goofy long runtime.

Shouldn't these come tightened all the way down?

Yes, they were very tight out of the box.

Gangsta: No vertical bladeplay, as I said, but just a tiny bit of side to side play. Doesn't bother me one bit; the knife feels very solid.

That's exactly what I'm hoping for. Didn't think I would like the original Para because the blade looked too small for the size of the handle. As it turned out, the Para handles great and became my favorite EDC. I'm hoping I feel the same as you when my Para 2 comes. I'm thinking a little more blade length will make the Para 2 my new favorite EDC.

I'm pretty sure, you'll sense/see the difference :D I'd say Spyderco has hit the bulls-eye with this one,I have collected a lot of Spydies looking for the perfect balance, of not too small or large, this one hits that perfection for me, love it.

I got a Para2 myself from the good folks at NGK, thanks go to Annie who was very efficient, friendly, and prompt in getting the order to me within a week.

The Para2 is perhaps as close to an ideal EDC blade I've found, improving and refining the original Paramilitary model in a variety of ways:
- detent is improved by adding a detent ball (now it kinda is more like an upside-down liner-lock)
- increased handle length and toning down the curves allows me 4-finger grips without using the choil and makes extended grips more comfortable.
- 4-way clip is nice, BTW it is interchangeable with clips from the Gayle Bradley, Chokwe and Delica/Endura.
- pivot bushing = smooth
- corner on rear top of blade tang ground down smooth with handle.
- index choil is now a lot wider. Really increases comfort level if you need to choke up but need a firmer grip.

Are there plans to do a "tip up capable" Military?

I have one that was modded as such, placing a standard Delica/Endura clip right over the lanyard hole (carries as deep as possible) and I have to say that it's a touch awkward taking the knife out and opening it simply because the handle is so long. I have size 8 or Large hands and I still find it a bit of a reach.

Thanks guys for the kind words ;).. We always appreciate the support and always look forward to hearing from you all again. The para's are going like hot cakes we hope to have more in soon.
Thanks
Annie :)

Great pics and nice review !
I love that double signature on the blade !
Great knife !!!

I just got my Para2 and it doesn't have both signatures just has Sal's.... awesome knife but what's up with that?

The first few just had Sal's sig according to a post I read. Eric's was added next to Sal's on some. Then they decided to moves Eric's on the other side of the hole for the rest of production.

Dang, this knife is looking good. Not very fond of the clip, but this can be arranged... ;)

After a few days of playing with the knife:

I tried reversing the clip for tip-up carry; I found it a bit tricky to put the knife in the pocket, because of the thumb ramp catching on the side of the pocket. I put back the clip like it was, fir tip-down carry, and I much prefer it this way. It slides in and out of the pocket quickly and easily. Besides, the ball detent securely keeps the blade closed in the pocket.

Some won't like how the clip looks, some will like it. I, for one, think it's allright. I can say it works pretty good: strong retention, smooth edges, just enough grab to take it out of the pocket easily.

The knife is a keeper for me.
