Just picked up a Persistence G-10 the other day, looking to replace a Spyderco Pro-Grip which i 've had for 17 years. The Pro-Grip is made in Japan and the Persistence in China. If i am looking to starting collecting Spyderco knives, are knives made in Japan a better starting point beside knves made in the USA.
looking for some input.

for the most part yes but there are some made in Taiwan and china that are really great. knives like the delica, endure and dragonfly are Japanese made(pretty much any of their knives with VG-10 steel is made there) but the tenacious line which includes the persistence ambitious and resilience are great knives made in china. A must have is the gayle Bradley with M4 steel its made in Taiwan and its a truly fine blade. to answer your question, on average the japan made knives are better but the china made value line are still worth every penny.

Second the Gayle Bradley. I don't know who runs the Taichung plant, but the quality control there is superb. The GB and Vallotton are two of the best put-together Spydies I've ever seen. The Golden, Colorado knives (Millie, PM2, Manix, etc) are excellent, but the Taiwan blades are really something special.

I have a Tenacious and love it. You get a lot of knife for the money in the Tenacious/Persistence line.
