my new PM2 arrived, now to decide if I should keep it

I was convinced by the fans here to buy a PM2 for EDC, or even to buy a Tenacious to try out to decide if I wanted to buy a PM2. Well I spotted a brown PM2 on the sales forum and bought it. For some reason I was thinking that it was gray with S35VN steel but when I opened the package it was brown and later I figured out that this combination isn't produced. I also figured out that brown looks somewhat gray in some photos, maybe that mislead me.

How does the brown work out for EDC? Does it collect dirt or stains? oils from skin? I've carried black G10 for a long time and it tends to become less black as it slowly oxidizes. I haven't tried to rejuvenate any black G10 yet.

The edge came sharp and I can't find any flaws in the construction.

Overall I like the knife but I'm not immediately blown away by it, coming from EDC'ing Benchmades mostly. The handle si a good size for holding and using the knife, could be smaller for carry but it will fit just fine in my pocket. The blade opens easily and locks up well. The lock is not as awkward to operate deliberately as I had anticipated but I have to be careful because my little finger tries to be in the way of the blade during closing. If the knife is held horizontally with the edge down and the lock pressed, the blade will swing down 45-60 degrees. If I hold it almost vertical and press the lock the blade will almost completely close. But more importantly for me I can hold the knife horizontally with the edge up, push the lock with my second finger and ease the blade up with my first finger, then close it slowly.

Now my choice is between brown and black. I can keep this one and EDC it or I can sell it and buy the slightly cheaper black one for EDC. I'm not interested in keeping it as a collector.

I actually like the brown, but not enough to warrant the extra $35 for what is essentially the same steel. I think the brown will hold up well to many days of carry and clean up just fine. It's amazing what WD40 can do for G10.

If you don't have a G10 Preference color I say go for the cheaper priced one since both steels are =. I only got the Brown because I found it for just about the same price as the regular production PM2.

Assuming you got a good deal on it, for just a few dollars more than the regular production model you can carry and use a Paramilitary just a little bit different than the original. While not technically a sprint run nor highly collectible, these brown PM2's are made in a limited quantity with a S35VN steel blade that will do anything you ask of it. When mine arrives I intend to put it in my pocket and enjoy! I don't own a Paramilitary so I'm really looking forward to this one.

But if you feel you need to be talked into keeping it you probably already have your answer.

- regards

I'm not sure you'd be able to get the price you paid for it back, so I'd just say keep it. The steel's a hair better than the normal PM2 steel, and you already have it. If you sold it, you'd likely lose some of what you spent and end up with just a regular production model.

Para 2's are great. I love my brown one!

Question: Alot of people say the brown s35vn is a "limited quantity" run but does anyone know how many are going to be produced? Just wondered what qualifies for a "limited" run.

I should be able to break even on the deal, maybe come out even better on a trade, but the difference in price isn't that much. I'm on a pretty tight budget so I could take that difference and use it towards another good knife. But as said I already have this one in my posession. I have several things to think about, including how I feel about the light brown G10 and I haven't made up my mind on that yet. It has taken great restraint to put the knife back into its box instead of straight into my pocket!

I would say keep it, you can always get a black one later(unless you don't like brown). All my sprint PM2s are going to be used, otherwise that steel might as well be 420. I mostly bought them for the different colors in the first place.

Mike, my understanding is that these are "distributor exclusives" ordered by Moteng. Here's how Spyderco handles these :

Spyderco Exclusive - This is defined by Spyderco as a production of any Spyderco product at the request of a wholesale customer in a configuration different than what has been previously produced. Exclusives are produced for one customer or in conjunction with one customer and the Spyderco Factory Outlet Store (at the customer's request). Like Spyderco Sprint Runs, this can include changes in the handle color, materials, blade steel, coatings, etc. Production quantities are generally based on minimum material requirements, etc. and the customer reserves the right to re-order this item while it is under the exclusive contract. In most circumstances, Spyderco reserves the right to re-produce the item after contractual obligations have been fulfilled.

BD: Fold that sucker up and stick it in your pocket...Go forth and slice things, the world is now yours for the cutting.

Thanks Gramps!

Use it!!!
I carry a Gray Sprint Run CTS-20CP and absolutely love it. Gray shows dirt much worse than the brown, but I really don't care how it looks, I bought it to use.

I would just use it and be happy with being just a litter different than most of the PM2 owners out there.

I have the black G-10 and satin blade standard issue, that being said, I personally wouldn't care what color or blade steel... The PM 2's are great knives in any configuration. YMMV

All the best in whatever your decision,

Baer

I have to say, keep it and use it. I just received a PM2 in the mail yesterday and I love it. I wasn't sure if the handle would work for me but after hearing so much positive feedback I finally pulled the trigger. I'm glad I did!

Buy the Black one and use them both! Rationalize it this way: One for Home/ one for work, or one for inside/ one for outside, maybe one for edc/ one for the outdoors. See, this way you still use both minus the guilt!

Sincerly,
Just another enabler:D

I can tell that you aren't really liking the brown... You either do or you don't like a particular color and usually your first gut feeling is the right one.

I would sell or trade it and get the black one or even a digi-camo and maybe a DLC coated blade. The DLC Spyderco uses is very tough. Nothing like the black coating on Benchmades.
