I found a Rookie in an outdoor shop at a shopping mall on the other end of the city. All stainless steel, SE, ATS-55 blade steel. This knife had sat on a display board for years. There was a little dust on it, but not a spec of rust. A light scratch on the handle earned me a 12,5% discount, so i can't complain about that.

I really love this knife, similar in size to the Delica so it's easy to carry. Can't figure out why this was ever discontinued, but I'm really thrilled about my new purchase, something I consider "collectable", at least to me. I'm really happy i found this with ATS-55 and not AUS-6 that is so common on many of the all stainless Spyderco folders. I have a plain edged Merlin with ATS-55, so i know from experience that it's great steel.

I'm just a happy chappy at the moment :D  :D

Hey Andre,

Congrats on the Rookie. I received one just like yours a little over a week ago.
I think its a great knife also with a great feel and terrific looks. I've carried it almost every day since I got it. Enjoy it.

I love it too. I have a plain edge with a steel handle, and serrated with g10. I wish they were reversed, but they are both great.

I bought a full size Police model, partly because I liked the rookie and partly because it seemed mandatory for any Spyderco collection. It just doesn't feel right, I guess because it is too big.

I don't know why the Rookie didn't last either. It's a great knife.

Nice find Andre, the Rookie is a very good knife. As for the "whys" of retirement, the short simple answer is always "poor sales", but the "why" of that can become more complex. Think that "poor timing" may have been a factor here, dealers may have been reluctant to carry four models (Standard, Delica, Calypso Jr, and Rookie) that were almost identical in size.

The Rookie is my favorite "low profile" carry knife. Mine is a plain edge, ATS-55, G-10 version. My Rookie is the first knife I bought on-line, here on the BFC for sale forums (Thanks tranefan). :D

Enjoy your new knife!

Thanks guys. Nice to see so many Rookie fans here :)

One more here. I've actually got two of them, one in G-10, the other SS, both plain edge in ATS-55. The G-10 Rookie was my EDC for quite some time, and I still carry it from time to time. I do prefer flat grinds and somewhat broader blades for my main EDC though nowadays.

But it's sure a nice knife.

Good find!!

I've been carrying a G10 SE Rookie for about 6 years now. I feel naked without it and bought several in G-10 PE, and SS PE/SE to keep her company. The EDC Rookie has been satin finished now to cover some of the acid marks and scratches and the serrations are wearing to a PE but I'll carry her 'til she falls apart......
