My new Sebenza is SO tight opening???

This is my first Sebenza... a Lg Moon Song. This thing is so tight I can't get it open the way I open all my other folders. I've had a lot of experience w/Benchmades and a few other production folders... but this Sebbie is bank vault tight.

Is this normal and is there anything I can do to loosen it up a bit and make it more user friendly????

Thanks... and here's a pic.

Try taking it apart and putting it back together. All the sebenzas I have ever owned were smoother than butter to open....

Here is a link on the procedure.

Hope this helps. If not, Ann and the crew would be more than happy to look at it for you and if your not open to this idea....Just send it to me :D

Sebbies generallywon't flip open like many knives, but they shold open smoothly with a firm push all the way open.

That said new ones are usually stiff, give it a week or two. Or if it really is bad send it back to crk.

Something I have noticed is that the thumb motion to open a Sebenza is a little different.

Most all other folders open with an arch or looping motion with the thumb. Sebenzas open with almost a straight line motion of the thumb toward the front.

Do not hesitate to send it back to CRK if anything seems wrong.

all 4 Sebenza's I've owned are as smooth as glass right out of the box. I'd take it apart first too.. but if you have any issues with your knife the people at Chris Reeve are absolutely first class to deal with and will make it perfect.

One of the things that might make it hard to open is the lock bar pressing against the knife blade. Try holding the knife horizontal with the blade hanging down at a 90 degree angle. Press the lock bar over and see if the blade moves freely. With no lock bar pressure on the blade, the blade should move back and forth with essentially no friction.

Smooth is not the same as loose.

Good luck and the posts about opening the Sebenza differently are correct.

My Sebenza was quite stiff when I first got it. I took it apart and lubricated it.
That helped a bit. But it took about a month to break in properly.
Now it is quite smooth.

Hope this helps.

Redsnake,
you say that this is your first Sebbie, but it looks like it has been disassembled at least once.
Disassemble it again, put it back together the way it should (check out Ted Voorde's thread on that),and opening your Sebbie should go smooth as glass!!!

Good luck and enjoy...

"...it looks like it has been disassembled at least once".

Please educate me. What indicators lead you to believe that the knife has been disassembled?

If I had to guess, his assumption is based on the fact that the screws have been reversed. This practice on it's own is of course common, but also indicates a possible disassembly.

One thing that is a little different on the Sebenza compared to some other knives is where you put your thumb in contact with the thumb stud. Your thumb should basically be resting on the blade and pushing against the side of the stud...not pushing down on the top of the stud.

Other than that....I second (or third by now) the taking apart, cleaning, re-lubing and additional break-in.

By the way, that is a great looking Sebbie. Moon Song is one of my favorite graphics.

That's right WT351.
Not that I know a lot about the Sebbie (since I just recently got a large regular myself-my first one!),but I have visited the forums often enough to know that the majority of Sebbie owners (me included) will disassemble their new Sebenza and turn the screws to match the clip-screw.

Mine's smooth like ice!

I think that the pressure of the lockbar is one of the main reason, i own 2 large sebenza and one is smoother because i notice that the pressure in less important and both blades move freely.

Thanks for all the tips guys. I'm going to try all that has been suggested.

This is new... I'm the guilty party who turned the screws over... picked up that little idea here as well. I like the looks this way.

I'll followup in a few days and let everyone know what I find out. This sucker is sure SHARP .... :D
