My new sharpening tool.

While I was on the Mac tool truck today, I bought a new ( at least to me) sharpening tool. It is called The Ultimate Edge. It looks like a kitchen sharpenening steel, but it has a flattened oval cross section, and is diamond coated. I used it to sharpen my Mini-jungle, and it is now razor sharp. I kind of thought this thing was going to be worthless, but it really works well, and it is easy to use. The only problem, is now I have no hair on my left arm.

That sounds interesting.
What is the size of this tool and if I may ask,the cost?
Does it come wth a sheath or?
Can you buy them from a local supply or do you have to get them off the truck?
It sounds like something I may be interested in.
TIA.

P1445: Yeah, me too. I'm always interested in a new sharpening system. Any pics would be great. Is it like the Spyderco design or like the one I was offering earlier? Does it use ceramic sticks or a diamond surface?

So, do you feel like you're being interrogated by Yvsa and me?

The Ultimate Edge is not a "Mac" tool, so you can probably get it at other places. I just checked, and Cabela's has a very similar product. It's on page 319 of their fall '99 catalog(www.cabelas.com), and they call it the NarrowStik. Mine is about 10" long, not including the handle. The handle is black plastic with an intregal gaurd. It looks like a Kitchen sharpenening steel, only it is a flattened oval that is about .5" across by .25" thick. It is a fine (600 grit?) diamond coated rod. You just run the blade down it just like a sharpening steel. It is probably too fine to sharpen a really dull knife, but it worked great as a touch up sharpener. Cabela's lists a 6" and a 10", but I also saw one on the Mac truck that must have been about 18". I paid $25 for the one I got, Cabela's price for the 10" is $29.99, $14.99 for the 6".

I hope that answers your questions.

Thanks p1445.
I may be able to find something similar at the G & K show later this month.

For ease of use how do you like this, compared to say, a Lansky?

The "Ultimate Edge" and the other tools like it would many be used as a touch up tool. The diamond "grit" is way too fine for extensive sharpening(i.e. reworking the bevel or removing nicks) but seems too be just right to restore the hair shaving edge after normal use. For reworking the bevel or dessing nicks, and for those times when you really beat up the edge, the Lansky sharpener can't be beat.

This isn't a case of one tool or another, but rather one tool complements the other.
Use the Lansky for heavy duty sharpening and use this tool for touch ups. To be honest a ceramic rod would probably work as well, but I find the the 10" length to be convienent, in that I can run the edge down it in one pass instead of the multiple strokes that would be required on the usual length of ceramic sticks.

Hope that helps.
