Hi All, I just finished the last touches on my sheath. It is made out of what is called Molave wood. It is a rare and extremely hard wood. To quote a site, "it is a hard wood that would last more than steel but very difficult to fix this wood because of its strength". The carving was all done by hand by a native Ifugao wood carver. The Ifugao are part of a group of indigenous mountain peoples of northern Luzon, which also includes the Bontok and Kalinga. They are responsible for the 2000-year-old rice terraces that were carved into the mountains without the aid of machinery!

The subject I chose is the ancient Greek god, Dionysos (Dionysus) or Bakkhos, more commonly, Bacchus. Many know of this god as the god of wine, of ritual madness and ecstasy. What most don't know however, is that Dionysus is represented by ancient city religions as the protector of those who do not belong to conventional society and thus symbolizes everything which is chaotic, dangerous and unexpected, everything which escapes human reason and which can only be attributed to the unforeseeable action of the gods. Needless to say, I won't bore you with ancient mythology, but I will state that I did spend a great deal of time looking for the right subject. I covered most everything from Angkor Wat Bas Relief to modern graffiti.

I just wanted to share this with you and get some feedback and thoughts. The finish was originally supposed to be linseed oil and antique wax but it turned out to be a much more arduous process involving a lot of time and patience. Tomorrow I will sun it and do a little touch-ups where needed, some buffing, some light sanding...time will tell.

I really look forward to hearing what your thoughts are. I just noticed that all the sheaths here are either Leather, Kydex, or Nylon.

I can't get myself to do any alterations to the sheath yet so what I've done (and what I have done with my previous machete/bolo) is to just tie a constrictor knot with some para-chord and just have it attached to me either on my belt where I can swing it to either side or in front of me or over one shoulder as a sling depending on how thick the foliage or if i have to do some climbing. I've found that having a chopper fixed to one place say my left and with a leg strap doesn't always cut it. The terrain dictates the position so an adaptive means of attachment (the para-chord) has been what works best for me so far. If there are any other suggestions to an alternative please share them. Thanx.

And much thanks for the positive feedback.

That is so cool!

I really like how they used the machining pattern on the handle scales and reproduced it in the sheath.

Thanx all for the positive feedback. I could have something done for anyone interested i guess. Im currently working on a simplistic approach with bamboo for my Falkniven F1 3g. What I have in mind is as close to naturally looking as possible. Then maybe, just maybe, some really intricate designs on the lip of the bamboo. haha, we see what happens. Please comment with ideas and thoughts for this sheath and the next. Again, thank you for the feedback. I told David (the carver) about the responses on here today and he just beamed with appreciation and a sense of pride. Sure makes him look forward to the next project.
