Tuesday I got an X-42 Field knife Second from a friend. Slightly used and still sharp! Tis the second knife I have with BG-42 and I'm really liking the steel.

The handle is the right size for me and very comfortable. The diamond checkering makes it stick to the hand in dry and wet conditions. Had no problems working with wet veggies and steak. Thumb ramp alows you to apply more force with the tip and gives your thumb a good place to rest. At the base of the ramp the handle is shaped in such a way that you have a second place to stick your thumb in different grips. Very cool Design!

Blade is Flat ground out of I think 1/8" stock with a recurved edge, making it a great slicer. It easally cut threw, Onions, Carrots, Potatoes and steak last night. It has plenty of belly for skinning or rocking on a cutting board.

The Factory sheath is okay. Holds the knife inplace well, and rides well on the belt. The Merging of Kydex and leather makes it a pretty strong sheath. Though mine was a little loose. No strapping it upside down to your pack. But I don't think that's what the designer had in mind. ;)

So far I've only used the knife in the kitchen and to cut some leather. IT did great cutting all three. Would make anyone a good large hunting knife. And I can't wait to get it in the field for some more testing.

Along with putting the knife to use in the kitchen I also spent some time and made two new leather sheaths for it. Both are made from 8/9oz veggie tanned leather, hand stitched with waxed nylon thread and colored with Tandy Leathers Antique Leather stain in Medium brown. Here are some pictures I just took of the knife and sheaths:

Here are some pictures showing how each sheath is worn and how I draw each knife to use it:

Mid ride sheath worn on right hip (strong side)

A special thanks goes to Dwayne AKA Leatherman for his help on the sheaths. He has given me lots of great information and some tools which really helped me inprove. Thanks Dwayne!! Questions and comments welcome. Thanks for looking,

Heber

Crap ! Heber those look awsome, terrific job on all of them, and they all look like they fit the user and the knife perfect, you deserve a gold star for those ! Great pics too !

Robbie Roberson. ;)

You need to send the knife and crossdraw to me to test for you Heber...I ought to be able to get it back to you by oh...2012 or so. It'll have a nice patina by then!

I don't know about that sheath, I prefer a long long belt loop.

But I definitely gotta get me one of them knives !!

Cheers,

Carl

A long belt loop usually is comfortable...the drawback is that it might not be where you think it is when you need it. For casual use, long might be the way to go...but for an EDC, I want it to be exactly where I put it and as out of sight as practical. This is like a pancake holster for a sidearm...high and tight. Even the military has has moved away from the dangling flap holster to a higher, more tightly controlled one. Different missions, different tastes...but I like it.

Thanks a bunch guys.

Nasty is right, this sheath stays put and thats one of the reasons why I made it with the short belt loop. The low ride sheath can be more comfortable IE move with your body better. To fix unwanted shifting problems, all you do is tie it to your leg via lanyard or leg strap. Both of which I can intagrate into a sheath. ;)

Hey Carl, if you liked the knife so much, why did you part with it?? LOL

Nasty, you have email. :D;)

Wildmanh,

The knive looks awesome, especially the hilt design, looks like it would perfectly fit. I am very fond of my Tigershark due to its blade size and impact weight. Imagine SOG producing a knife with the Tshark blade, rimmed thumb rest of the Vision and the XB hilt including the hammering feature of the Government Agent!

Very nice. I love the X-42. You really utilize the SOGS Wildman....

What's the folder in the pocket? What's that black pouch on the belt?

Sorry I missed your post. The folder is my trusty Outdoor Mini Autoclip and the belt sheath houses my Leatherman Mini. Those three make a great combo. Used em in the kitchen just yesterday to make lunch. The Autoclip serves as a pairing knife and the Field knife does big chores. :D

Heber,
You are turning into such a knife slut!
Better not mention any more, I understand you're only allowed to own 12 knives in Happy Valley before you're banished to Ogden.
Denis

Happy New Year, anyway. :D

Hey Dpris, I live near a happy valley also, (Tenn) here we are allowed 27 folders and 6 straights, 30 minutes after sunset  .

I will admit to you guys that I have been sneaking and carrying 30 folders, 10 straights and a zip gun in my sock :p

You never know about them crazy things roaming the woods after dark, forgot what you called them a while back, but here they are called..........WILD THANGS :D

Hi Robbie,
It's people like you who give rise to the old "Is that a zip gun in your sock or are you just glad to see me?" :D
I'll keep your secret on the 30 & 10.
The last few years I was a working man I carried three guns, four knives, and three sets of handcuffs on the job. Nowdays I've cut back a little in my old age.
No handcuffs.
Denis

What ! no cuffs ? Thats the one thing I make sure I have in the console, I am to slow and fat to wrestle anyone for extended periods of time, but I am still strong enough to get cuffs on them if I had to (in short burst). That way I don't have to worry about them whuppin me up real bad while I am waiting on the paid law. (thankfully, I have never had to use them :( )

I sure miss them rough and tough days, don't you... Those smells coming from the back seat on friday and saturday nights.....My partner and I were accused of "bird dogging" the joints, just so we could get a DUI, (back then it was called DWI). During the 82 worlds fair, I carried a ankle holster with a .25 cal. and a dagger, those was the good ole days.... :D

Knife slut? More like Khife Don Juan! :D if I was sent to Ogden I could hang out with the Cutie Andrea more. :D

What no hand cuffs? But they are perfect to distract the Rocky Mountain Snipes. ;)

Robbie,
Had a guy stagger up to the car one night while I was parked in the jail parking lot doing some paperwork after dropping off a customer. He'd been stabbed pretty good, put him in the back seat while I was calling for the FD, bled so bad they replaced the rear seat. He survived, by the way.
One wonderful Saturday night I had a guy let go on the way to jail. Damndest thing, the jailers removed a soup recipe from his pocket that matched up perfectly with what was all over my back seat. I mean, you could pick out just about everything on that list if you looked close enough. The carrots were particularly discernible. Had to remove the back seat at a car wash, spray it down thoroughly, and leave it at the station to dry for a week before I could put it back in the car. That was the worst one I ever had.
We had to arrest a gal one night who was majorly drunk & causing a sizable fuss at an apartment complex, wouldn't leave & refused to give us a phone number for somebody to come & get her. Very cute little gal when she went into the back seat of my buddy's car for the trip to jail, a total mess when she came out. Told my buddy about the carwash trick. He was not amused.
Do I miss those days? Nope, much more fun not being a working man any more. :D

Heber Juan Kenobe Don,
OK, we'll go your way. You are hereby absolved of being a knife slut. There's a cutie in Ogden? Drove past Odgen in September & must have missed her.
Handcuffs are too big for Timpanogos Snipe, ya gotta use thumbcuffs. Anything bigger, they slip right out of 'em.

Denis, you distract the snipe with the Big ones (they like shiny things you know) then throw the thumb cuffs on them when they aren't looking. Then again I'm not sure if I'd want to get close enough to cuff one. Those are some mean birds.
