Hello all,
I just got a new SOG- the GOV-TAC as a high school grad present from my grand parents.
I noticed the sheath is really stiff, unless the blade goes in perfectly, other than that i really like it.

I was also wandering what type of steel it is? as well as anyother opinions on this knife- good or bad, please share your experinces

thanks

I really like my Seal Pup...you don't hear much about Sog knives in comparison to a few years ago, but they're decent knives for the money.

I like the design of your Gov-Tac, enjoy it - and don't be afraid to use it!

I quite like the gov tac myself. Aus 8 takes a nice edge but doesn't hold it for as long as some of the more expensive steels. When you got the spare green fork out for a lansky or spyperco sharpening system and you will get many years of use out of your knife.

I like Sogs fixed blades but the sheaths are terrible. I recently called Sog about getting a replacement sheath for the Seal pup elite. I know that the sheaths are not covered under their warranty but my sheath was chewed up like a dog had it before I got it. Anyway, the warranty dept. said they would send me a new cordura sheath. Twice I called and twice they lied to me and I've recieved nothing:mad: . So much for them. I won't be buying Sogs anymore. They can kiss my caboose.:thumbdn: I'll be buying the new Benchmade fixed Griptilian to replace my Seal pup elite. Forgive me Benchmade for straying. I've been a bad consumer.

I've got the Tech Bowie Satin and it's a great shouder blade...I also like the sheath a lot, mine seem's to be working well especialy compared to my Entrek Silhouette wich is a great knife but the shealth is pure crap!!!

The GOV-TAC has a .200 thick AUS8A steel blade which is a borderline super steel (imo). It holds an edge about as good as 440C but is tougher but not as stain resistant. You should put a little mineral oil on it to keep the edge sharp longer and you will notice that it will go in and out of the sheath better if you put a few drops where the knife makes contact with the sheath when you put it away. I didnt put any on right away when I got a SOG fixed blade and the sheath put scratches in the blade but when I took the knife in for minor warranty work, SOG took the scratches out and resharpend the knife (excellent :)). If it is a grey blade it is bead-blasted. If it is a black blade it is Titanium Nitride coated (better and more expensive).

Hey Guys...
A little spray of SNAP brand silicone spray in the right areas of the sheath can do wonders for a tight sticky sheath...
Give it a try,, you might solve the problem..

i have a sog recondo, field knife and sog seal, great knives, but a double terrible sheath came with the Seal. enjoy your knife!

I hope you enjoy the knife. I've always liked SOG's knives, and really like the GOV-TAC. I thinks the pretty awesome that your grandparents got it for you, all i got was $25 for my grad. Enjoy the knife, and use the hell out of it.
