Well after having it for a few weeks I finally decided to rehandle in walnut, I wont be using it as a hunter as I dont hunt anymore. And I have to say along with many others it is the smoothest opening knife I have and I just counted them the other day to 100. Modern, vintage, traditional etc. Built like a tank and resharpened to hair popping. Have to decide now between black walnut or butter nut, just a few words of praise for a great knife.

I'm with you PCL,

The Alpha folders are as smooth opening as butter! Now if you can find some black walnut with a nice grain it will be a fine looking handle!

Ditto, on the Smooth opening of this model. Buck offered this model with black walnut handles back in 2007. My daughter collects this model and I procured one for her. DM

How many does she have and is it the 279 only? And I have some black walnut so dark I call chocolate fudge.

I have been searching for the different steel options for the 279 and I have found so far the 420hc, 420hc BOS, and S30v. Were there any others?

Ok, I went thru them. The walnut handled Alpha has the Idaho stamp and blade steel of ATS-34. The up right 'T' stamp has Sanvik steel. The 2008 Club knife
has a mirror polished, gold etched blade with routed buffalo horn handles. Hope this helps. DM
