Our tool order from work came in and I just got my new Uber-Gadget:

I particularly like that it is many gadgets in one.

I plan to test it's range later tonight...

I can see one design flaw already. It needs a standard picatinny rail or 5.
That would allow many more options for mounting accessories. :p

I'm pretty sure that's a device used in cabling, to pitch the pull string to the right location without having to push up every third ceiling tile. You tie the string to the cable and reel her in.

So, how did it work? I could sure use one of those...

At first I thought that was a hand gun/fishing rod thing! Aim and fire and the hook goes FLYING! But silly me, I should have known that it can't be a fishing gun, ad you have to HAND CRANK the hook nack in. A real Uber-gadget fishing gun would have a whisper quiet battery operated winder, as opposed to the manucal crank one.

If I were a cable guy, I'd need one of those too! Now you need an assault vest with the handgun holster pouch!

Well, the first one I got had a bad reel so I sent it back. Made a beautiful 30' shot, over a light and under a duct with it though. That's when I realized the reel was defective.

Will let you know how the replacement is...

Ok, here's my improved version.

The biggest improvement is replacing that wimpy little rell with a full size Zebco 33.

Also, the carabiner is nice since it won't fit in a shoulder holster. ;)

The Mini-Mag is a USCG one (thanks Kodiak PA) with lithium AAs and a Brinkman Nextstar bulb (thanks Walt).

It works MUCH better.

Now, what to do with the little reel? Was going to put it on a small homemade "survival" fishing setup, but it is weak enough that I am not sure I want to rely on it for survival!

Can't you use a trained monkey, dog, ferret, or small child?

While I was doing an install, I learnt that it's easier to run the cables (or atleast rope/string etc) in before they put the floor tiles down. One time, the locals put the floor down overnight and I got them to remove all the tiles the next morning.
I mean, I take the trouble to give them a schedule, and they ignored it! It was simple - each room number with a date when they could start, and a date when I needed it done by so the techical furniture and monitor stacks could be put together and the wiremen do their magic.
I suppose a cable shooter like yours is most useful for running cables into areas already installed, or where a site is being retrofitted.

There are companies on both sides of the pond that use ferrets to run cable through existing conduit and pipe runs.

In my youth I once used a slingshot and a ball of string tied to a 1/2" nut for a cable lead. You gotta do what you gotta do...keep us up to date on how the new tool stands up, CD!
