My new Umnumzaan.....and another lockbar question.

While at a gun show yesterday, I picked up a NIB Umnum(my 2nd CRK) born on May 18. I took some serious time debating on that one and a Large Classic 21 and since I already have a Sebbie(Large Regular), the Zaan won the toss. I'm very happy with the fit and finish on my new EDC, definitely a no-nonsense pitbull of a folder, but I had some issues with the lockbar.....so, I was hoping for some input. First, the lockbar was extremely stiff but has seemed to have broken in slightly due to me taking it apart and re-lubing everything. Opening the blade is a little easier but it is going to take a little more getting used to. I did a search and found out that this knife needs a break in period, and being that I thoroughly love this knife, I'm willing to tolerate this little inconvenience.

My main question is just how far should the lockbar travel over when the lock is engaged? The lockbar on mine travels about 90%.....not that I'm complaining because the lockup is rock solid.

Thats perfectly normal and with in spec with the Umnumzaan. Since the lockup rests on the ceramic ball the point of contact is further in the lockbar so what looks to be a
90% lockup is more like a 50% lockup.

Thanks.....I've been looking up some pics of the lockup and all that I've seen have been exactly the same as mine.

One of mine is about the same, normal due to the lockup..Congrats on that umnum. Good choice!

I just got mine back from the SPA and the lock bar went to 90% too (as opposed to 70%ish before). I was suprised also. However as mentioned above, 90% on these knives is more like 60% on a Sebenza because of the ceramic ball. And yes, they are pitbulls.

Nope......S30V. Although it's S30V, I have to say that it is the sharpest knife in this steel that I've ever bought, so the stiff action on the lockbar is an oversight for me. :D

I didn't even pay attention to the steel till I got home and looked at the birthday card. I was anxious about getting the Zaan since I had heard that they weren't being produced at the moment, due to some redesigning that was going on or something like that. The only CRK they had that had S35VN was a Nyala, that I almost picked up(along with a shotgun) but the Zaan won out on that comparison too.

I understand that the ball detent is round and it will look like more of the lock is touching but when I look at the groove made on the metal from the ball detent I have seen it go as far as 85-90 percent.

I just don't understand why you would want something like a ball detent touching the blade instead of hardened metal. Doesn't this make it easier to slide?

I just noticed today that the blade is offcenter to the point that one side is almost touching the scale. Has anybody else had this problem? Fixing to do a search about that.

I wouldn't say that the blade being off center is a common problem. Just send it in if it can't be remedied with a good cleaning and reassembly. Crk WILL take care of you I can promise you that. They're cs is very good.

You my friend have a crimped washer. I'm almost sure of it. If you have an Umnumzaan take-down kit, take it apart and make sure both are completly flat. If not, mail it on in and wait a week or two to get it back. I JUST had the same problem. It drove me nuts. I had to send it in. Keep us posted.
