My new Volt II. Nice knife but this one has to go back

I've been looking at the pictures of the Volt II's for awhile now, and always thought the knife looked like it would be comfortable in hand.
I just never got around to ordering one though. So, the other day I was in our local Bi-Mart to get my hunting and fishing license, and while I was waiting, I looked at the knives in the counter display, and there was the Volt.

I asked the clerk to show me the knife, and after I flipped it open, I found my thinking was right on the money. It is really comfortable in hand.
I have large hands, and it fit like a glove...
So, after that, I had to have it. I was in a hurry as I was on my way to work, so I didn't look at it very closely.
When I got home that night, I got to spend a little time checking it out.
The first thing I noticed was that the blade was way off center. I couldn't see where it had rubbed against the liner, but I grabbed a very thin piece of paper and slid it between the blade and liner. It slid through, but I could tell it was a little tight.

Its not a crisis, but this one is a little closer than I like, and I don't want to adjust the pivot, because it opens and closes perfectly imho.
So, tomorrow I'm going to take it back and exchange it for another one. I'm sure they don't all have this issue...

Anyway, I really like this knife. As I mentioned, the handle couldn't fit my hands any better if I had someone make it for me. It opens quickly, the blade has zero movement in any direction, when opened, and the lockup is at about 50%. The scale texturing has enough grip to be able to get a good hold on the knife, but not so aggressive that it will be hard on pockets, like other knives I have had. The pocket clip is tight, but not to tight. No need to do any tweaking on this one.
I paid a little more for it buying it at a brick and mortar store , but thats to be expected. Still, for $26.00, this knife is a bargain in my eyes.

So, heres a few pictures I took of it today.

Mine was exactly like your knife. I fixed it by loosening the pivot and handle screws, holding the blade centered while I tightened the pivot and then tightened the handle screws. It is now centered.

He's right, that'll fix most centering problems on most knives. But what can you really ask for in a $20 knife.

Ya, I know it would probably fix it, but I'm going to go back to the store, and look at some other first. If the others are similar, I'll loosen it up and try to get it a little further from the liner.

Granted it is not an expensive knife, but I have a few others that are in the same price range, and they don't have this issue.
Its not a deal breaker, or a dig at Kershaw, just an observation. As I mentioned, I really like the knife.

You know, I always wondered how adjusting the pivot would center the blade. Never made sense before. So thank you for answering the stupid question that I never asked.

Yes, this works 9/10 times. Mike, I suspect that you can realign the blade in a couple minutes with no problem. As Daniel stated, loosen everything up, maybe wedge a piece of paper in the side of the liner where the blade is leaning. Tighten the pivot all the way, remove the paper, proceed to tighten the handle screws. You can then back off the pivot a bit to restore the smooth action.

Thanks Rev. I've never had a knife that needed realignment, and this one is so smooth, I hated to give it a try. We have to go back to the store that I bought it, for some fishin supplies, so I'll check a few of the others while I'm there, and see if this one was just an oddball. If it is the norm for this model, I'll do a little tuning tonight when we get home. I'm having a hard time keeping my son away from this one though, so while we are there, I may pick one up for him too.

It really is a solid, well made knife, and a bargain at the price imho. I've never tried this steel before, but I've noticed a couple companies using it now.

The design (RJ Martin) is one of the very best. I had a gift certificate to an online store for a while and I got a Kershaw Zing. Same designer, and it's one of the best little folders I've ever had. Nothing about it at all that I would change, and that is rare to find a knife like that.
The steel is decent and the edge should hold for a while before needing a slight touchup. It is a great value no doubt.

The Zing sure seems to have a good following. It is rare to find a knife, that you really can't find fault with, or at least something you would do differently.
It's funny because when I got my original Vapor about 7 years ago,for the outlandish price of 13 bucks :D, I really figured I would be able to find things I didn't like about it.
Nope. To this day, I have yet to find anything I would change.

I felt the same way when I first got a Shallot for around $35. It was thin, comfortable, and an incredible cutter for the price. It was my first knife in Sandvik steel. sharpens with zero problems, come back to life when stropped on the back of a notebook.

I really like the Zing tanto. The tanto comes with the option of serrations too. Mines like an exacto knife.

That is the one I got. I actually have started carrying it for the last 4 days (since I got it). It booted the 0560 out of my pocket, yes I'll make a thread soon about it. ;)

Thats quite a testimonial for the knife, to knock a 0560 out of pocket

I was lucky to have been able to review a Volt II in a passaround a year ago - It was a surprisingly nice knife - I love the RJ Martin styling queues.

I gifted a Zing to a friend of mine a few years ago, and he occasionally brings it back by to have the edge touched up. Here is a pic of the well-used knife from yesterday -

Thanks for the pictures mqqn. I admit I'm not well versed in Kershaws, but I always thought the Zing was only made in orange.

I had plans of going back to the store I bought the Volt today, but we decided we had more than enough fishing stuff, and really didn't need any more.
Maybe tomorrow if they are open. I'm not losing any sleep over it :D

Those RJ Martin designs rock. I love the Volt II, and the Chill is very similar except it is much slimmer, lighter, and manual.
