My new watches....

I think i'm starting to get addicted to watches now, a week ago i picked up a Luminox 3000 series (blue face) to replace my beat up old Timex Ironman, and i was happy with it, then i started to do research online and discover that watches were almost as addictive as knives and flashlights.....

i started off with the Luminox (time exposure);

tritium illumination is incredibly cool, no charging of photoluminescent paint and the slow fade to darkness, just a constant light output good for 12 years before the dimming starts.....

i then went to Kittery Trading post, bought a Wenger Battalion because it was on clearance, problem is, it was a major aggrivation to get it synced up to the Atomic Clock (Time.gov) and the day/date bilingual calender was a royal headache to set, i hated it and returned it the next day....

i took a few days off from watch searching, until this weekend, when i discovered there was a Seiko Factory Store in one of the Kittery outlet minimalls, and they were having a 30-50% off sale....

i stopped in and purchased a Black Pulsar Tech Gear Solar 4000 series Diver watch ("Black Diver"), Pulsar is Seiko's "economy" line, they use the same movements as the Seikos, they just cost less and don't have the "prestige" of the Seiko name, internally, they're very similar

Pulsardiver2.jpg

the Diver is very similar to the world-renowned Seiko "Monster" series, they have a similar high performance lume paint, a slightly lower end clockwork mechanism, and are solar powered, they also have a few advantages *over* the Monster (besides the price savings)....

it's Solar powered, and once fully charged, the battery has a 6 month power reserve, the Monster is an automatic, and has a 24-48 hour power reserve

the second hand stops moving (or "Hacks") when the crown is pulled to position 2 to set the time, the Monster does not hack, making it annoying to perfectly sync with Time.gov

the Monster *does* have a better crystal (concave as oposed to convex) and is better constructed than the Pulsar Diver, but it's also more expensive, i'll eventually get a Monster (probably an Orange Monster) at some point, but with my Luminox and Diver, i'm set

I did stop in a second time to the Seiko Outlet on Saturday, they have some "almost perfect" factory seconds on the back wall, watches that may have some cosmetic flaws, or were used as demos in watch stores and can't be sold as new, they lower the price dramatically and give them a 30 day warranty, i picked up a Pulsar Chronograph, but was not happy with it's luminescent paint performance, so i took it back and swapped it for an "Almost Perfect" Blue Diver, same price, but with far superior lume paint....

darned if i can find a thing wrong with it, aside from some extremely minor cosmetic scratches on the watchband which will happen with normal use anyway....

now, if these watches only came with Tritium Traser illumination, they'd be *perfect*.... solar powered, built like a tank, a heavy, solid, manly chunk of stainless steel...

here's some more pics of the watches....

hopefully these three timepieces will satisfy my watch needs for the forseeable future....

the ultrabright glow fades quickly, after about 5 minutes it's settled down to about Luminox level brightness, and stays that way for about an hour, then slowly fades to about 50% less than Luminox

with properly dark-adapted eyes, you can make out a faint glow all evening, it's nowhere near as readable as my Luminox, but it *is* readable

i don't think it's Super Luminova (or the Seiko equivalent lume paint), but it's definitely better than the standard lume paint which will fade to nothing in about an hour

the Pulsar Chrono i purchased then returned would only glow for an hour at most, and the initial brightness would fade after about a minute or so....

the full retail Black Diver cost $110 after discounts, the "Almost Perfect" Blue Diver cost $45 after discount, the Black Diver has a 3 year "bumper to bumper" warranty, *any* defects are covered, not just the clockwork, but the case, the band, the crystal, everything, and that's the factory Pulsar warranty, no extended warranty crap, the Blue Diver, as a factory second, only has a 30 day warranty, but i figure since it's an overbuilt divers watch, the chances of it failing are minimal, worth the chance

I also have one of those (blue) solar Pulsar watches, and it's excellent!...But how about this one:

That's my "daily-wear" watch, and it's as big and heavy as a shuffleboard puck...It's called the "Ecozilla".:D.

Oh, and here's a Casio Edifice Chronograph that I have received from a recent trade:

My problem with watches is my close friend is a Watch Repairman/Horologist at a upscale store. The low end stuff is Hamilton, Breitling, and Bell & Ross. At the upper end you have Zenith, & Patek Phillipe. So thanks to this exposure I want watches that I cannot afford at this time.

In this thread there were some diver's watches. I am curious, for most people (I assume many who buy them are not really divers), what is the specific benefit from the watch being designated as "diver's watch"? Is it that it's really waterproof (vs. just waterproof), or are there some other benefits?

I am a newbie when comes to watches and always treated them in a utilitarian way, but I can see an appeal of a nice watch.

Well, the main reason *I* got them was that they were cheap, the Luminox has a unique illumination system, and the Pulsars were a good, cheap, solidly built watch

i don't dive, but i do go swimming, and a diver's watch will have *no* problem handing swimming depths (it can withstand depths up to 200M)

i also tend to be rough on watches and dive watches are built much more solidly than a normal everyday watch or "dressy" watch, and since i don't wear suits (hate the bloody things....) i have no need of a dressy watch

the Luminox is a lightweight, but durable watch (essentially a FRN case), so light i forget i'm wearing it, but built to take a pounding, the Pulsars are a big, substantial chunk of stainless steel

Well, there's no denying it, I'm now officially addicted to *watches* now....

over the past week, I picked up an "Almost Perfect" refurbed Seiko 5 (SNXL 18), ditched the cheesy folded-link bracelet, and put it on a nice black gatorskin watchband....

rather than retype my posts here, I'll link to the reviews I posted on Timezone.com

(Mods if there's a problem with this, feel free to edit/modify my post, I post under the username "MacTech" on TZ as well, so the threads should be searchable in the Seiko subforum....)

My Seiko 5 review

the Seiko 5 was a watch of "firsts" for me, my first Seiko, my first Automatic mechanical watch, my first watch with a transparent display back, and the watch that started a whole new obsession with mechanical/automatic watches....

now that I had gotten bitten by the Automatic bug, I grabbed a few of my lesser-used duplicate knives (3 knives) and sold them, to fund my new timepiece addiction....

to make matters worse, my local Seiko factory store (Kittery, Maine) had a killer deal on the polymer-band "Monster" series dive watches, they lowered the price from $280-ish to $179, and on top of that, they had a 20% discount off the $179 price, bringing the final cost down to around $150....

$150 for a well-regarded, popular, and well loved watch like the Monster series?, it was a no-brainer that I *had* to get one.....even though I *already* have a Luminox 3000, a Seiko 5, and a pair of Pulsar Tech Gear Solar 4000 Divers......

here's the review of my new favorite watch, the SKXA45 "Orange Monster"

after my first couple of days with the Monster, I can safely say this....

I now *hate* the Pulsar Divers, and am trying to find a way to get rid of them, there's nothing wrong with them, they *are* a decent watch, I just don't like them anymore, compared to the Monster, well, there's no comparison, the Monster's better in every way, if the Pulsars are Buck 110's, the Seiko Orange Monster is a Spyderco Manix/ CR Sebbie

the Pulsars will probably end up as Christmas or Birthday gifts, I *may* also gift out the Seiko 5 to Dad, as he'd be happier with a simple understated mens watch, I can't see him wearing a Pulsar Diver....

thankfully, there *is* a happy ending to this madness after all....

now that I own an Orange Monster, my watchlust has been sated, I no longer feel the need to get any more watches, I already have all I need....

The Timex Ironman is my beater/knockaround watch, for when I'm doing mechanical-hostile stuff
The Luminox 3000 series is my night-stand/movie theater watch, any time I need long-term view-ability in darkness
The Seiko 5 will be for those times I want a watch that's lighter on the wrist than the Monster
The Orange Monster will be my EDC (EDW?) and see the most use of all the watches, it's a solid, heavy tank of a watch and built to take whatever you can dish out...
