Ever since I heard about the Wenger Pack Lock, I wanted to try out a medium-size SAK with a locking blade... I wanted a saw and scissors to go along with the main blade and discovered the Evo S17 -- sort of like a Vic Huntsman except without a small blade.

They seemed to retail for ~$40 plus shipping on eBay and from the major e-tailers but I found one today at Sportsman's Warehouse that cost me $37 including sales tax (clam packed). The fit and finish was great on the two Wengers I've bought in the past, but the backsprings were decidedly weaker than on my Victorinoxes... This S17's non-locking tools still seem a tad weaker in the spring than my Vics but less weak than my older Wengers.

The main blade lockup is tight with zero bladeplay and the funky locking screwdriver is a neat thing to play with... I haven't used this knife yet but I'll make it my secondary EDC starting today and we'll see how it fares!

All the tools I need for an EDC SAK... (I added the Vic mini screwdriver)

The Pack Lock looks uncomfortable but I forget it's there!

Yes, you push down on it to unlock the blade. They've been using this for a long time. I have an old Wenger with it. Very simple and smooth operation.

I forgot to add that the main blade has a half stop, which surprised the %*$@! out of me the first time I opened that bad boy up... :D

I've never seen a half stop on any locking blade regardless of lock type, only on slipjoints... Interesting...

The half stop must be a new thing, along with the ergonomic scales. My older packlock doesn't have that iirc. Looks to be a four layer SAK, yet maybe only slightly larger than a camper - good deal!

A half stop is a safety, reminding you not to let the blade slam on a misplaced fingertip.

I'm careful to guide my slipjoints gently closed. It's almost a necessity with knives like the traditional Laguioles which don't have a kick. But I don't like any slipjoint snapping shut.

With a half stop, I let it hit that halfway point and then hold it carefully from there.

Yea having half stops on locking blades is and added saftey feature, also found on Vic trekkers:thumbup:
