Went the the local knife shop and spotted this. had to have it. there seems to be excessive play in the axis lock though.

Axis locks can and do have vertical play every once in a while. The lock bar slides up the tang and then can run out of room to ride up and fully lock the blade. (because the bar is being stopped by the liners/scales of the knife).

I have two that do this. The time before last, I was looking at a Benchmade, can't remember what model, and it had MAJOR vertical play. I handed it to both of the store owners, and they were appauled. They were sending it back and checking the rest of the ones they had in stock (or so they said, they had several hundred knives in tupperware bins) It's all how they cut the tang that the axis bar rides up on.

well to clarify...the knife has a solid blade lockup but the axis lock has horizontal play. Im pretty sure its fine and when the blade wears in more im sure the lockup will be tighter. Meaning the lock will slide up the blade more

I think I know what you're talking about, wrist flick it, not mall ninja wrist flick, but do that and see if that eliminates the play.

I guess I should elaborate on what I'm guessing at, When you open the blade the axis bar rides up the tang but still has some play in it even though there's no vertical blade movement?

I suppose I should add that after literally tens of thousands of axis openings I haven't had a problem with wrist flicks, and again in my experience a few hard flicks haven't caused damage. YMMV.

I have some slight blade play on my D2 940...VR6GLX96 im from jersey too what shop did ya go to?

i go to "just knives 101" in williamstown for my benchmade purchases. He has an esee rc4 there but wants $194 for it. But his benchmade and other knife selections arent priced too bad

Side to side play on the AXIS lock de-actuator isn't a problem. In fact, too little can be problematic - the smallest piece of pocket lint could interfere with blade closure. The only family of AXIS lock I've never seen a 'loose' de-actuator in is the full auto variants, like the 5000, 6150, & 9555. I suppose, as the AXIS lock de-actuator is also the automatic trigger - and under more tension - that is important. The Bone Collector series are nice. I have the fb 15005-2 (Walnut), 15020-1 (2-tone G10), and 15030-2 (Walnut) - keepers all. I didn't like the skull logo, but, in the final analysis, who cares - they are all great knives. The mini B.C., 15030-2, cost me the most - it was a Christmas present. When I ripped it open, my wife exclaimed, "Wow - that is pretty... sure you want it?". It was over a month before my pusher got another one in for me... she carries it everywhere. D2 is a great blade metal!

thanks for the awesome reply. yeah d2 is pretty sweet. i touched up the blade on my sharpmaker and it is razor sharp now. i cant wait to get some real use out of it. i actually picked up this knife to replace my 707 sequel while it is away for warrenty work for the second time. if i have another issue with the knife i will make a whole thread about it (the 707 not the bone collector). but yeah. great knife. couple stupid things they put on the blade but they dont effect performance.
