Well, I am moving to our corporate offices and needed to give up the company car - SO, I picked one of these up to park in the corporate lot.

WHAT a car! It is a used 1998 BMW 328i - what a beauty and this booger is FAST! 75 in 3rd and it stills has room to scoot.

If you feel that the gear is owning you too much, I would like to be the first in line to relieve you of this BMW burden. :D

Nice car!

Uhm...why? At least in Europe, their resale value is higher than that of any other brand.

If this is "junk" very interesting.

I did not lease, but got a GREAT deal on purchasing it. I always find that it is interesting how people who cannot have something find an excuse/reason to justify them NOT having it!

So far, this is a beauty!

David,

I think Mutt could have one if he wanted to. He probably does not. In NYC I would be hard pressed to think of a reason to have ANY nice car, even with garaging.

My wife has a 2003 530i. Beemers are wonderful cars. They are, however, technological nightmares, and things do start breaking after a certain period. You MUST find a good mechanic, and NOW.

It will cost a fair bit of money to maintain. We purchased the extended bumper to bumper warrantee, so we have little to worry about for another 4 years. Areas of concern are head gaskets, air intakes, rubber, electronic modules, and brakes. Make sure you develop a good relationship with whatever garage you use, get a Chiltons's (or similar) manual so you can understand the complexities of your vehicle better, and stay on top of the maintainance.

Best Regards,

Dave, I've owned three BMW cars and two BMW motorcycles in my past...
the electrical system goes in about 3 or 4 years and becomes very problematic...

I currently own a Toyota 4runner, a Jeep wrangler, a Kawasaki drifter, a Honda nighthawk750 and a Suzuki GSXR750 and all of those have never had a problem... my business uses a Mitsibishi Fuso truck, which really sucks, a GMC van which is okay, and a Ford Van which sucks to high heaven...

and, actually, if you ask anyone who knows me, I can afford to buy two or three BMW's right off the lot at MSRP without batting an eye, but it don't mean I want to be stupid about it...

it is true about high maintenance and BMW's, but they still are nice cars and win lots of accolades

good luck with it and enjoy it, I know they are a blast to drive :D

I have 328i, and have had blissfully few problems with it. It's great to drive. I think the most amazing thing about it is the brakes: man, when you hit the brakes, that thing stops. Handling is also very crisp and responsive. Acceleration in mine ('96) is relatively good but nothing to write home about.

Americans are woefully inadequate in maintaining and replacing vital performance parts on vehicles. Europeans seem much more inclined to replace parts because of elapsed time or mileage. We usually wait till something suffers a critical failure. For the way we maintain our cars, it seems that Japanese cars are best for the American consumer because they do not require that much service, and American cars because parts are very cheap.

Why is that? We spend so much time in ours cars but wait until they take a dump before we'll fix them. Not only that but my wife will spend endless amounts of time trying to find the cheapest tire or battery.
