I know you guys like little fixed blades, so here's a few pictures of a little knife I just finished up.

Nick Wheeler made a small paring knife the other day, which was the inspiration for this pattern. It's about 5 3/4" oal, .080" stock. The steel is belt finished 52100, curly maple scales with brass pins and an oil and varnish finish. Heat treat by Darrin Sanders to 62 rockwell.

I can't wait to make another of these. It is about the perfect size for front pocket carry, or low profile belt carry. I need a sheath made now, but I'm not sure how I want to carry it.

I think the next one I'm going to do in a stainless of some sort with elephant or mammoth ivory.

Anyway, here are some pictures. As always, comments and suggestions are welcome. These are the first pictures I've ever tried with a light box. It is just a hacked together thing, but I'm going to make a much better one for the next time I take pictures.

Beautiful! That looks like a great little user. I'd carry it in a neck sheath under my clothes, doesn't look like it would weigh you down too much. Great work!

Boy howdy! That looks like a winner. Very nice!

Here's a thread that might help you with a home made light box:

Hey Medic-thats a very cool knife, my kitchen has a great range of Antique, Vintage, and Custom knives - that Sir is a corker, congrats on your talent, its great to see your work my friend...you have done a splendid job, that was a close call on the middle finger there too by the way!

Wow, that looks absolutely fantastic, and a great user

Thanks guys. Frank, that thread is where I got the idea. I couldn't find a big enough box though. I'm going to frame together a pine skeleton and cover it with white fabric and make an actual light rail for the next photo shoot. The one I made last night is utterly embarrassing.

Duncan, this little thing likes to bite. Cut me deep on the finger, then nicked me on the palm of my left hand. I'm telling you, I'm not sure my body can take metal work much longer as clumsy as I am. However, taking up knitting wouldn't be much safer. The needles, you know.......I'm assuming a corker is a good thing? My logic is thus: corks hold in wine, wine is good, corks are near wine, ergo corks are good. Perfectly logical I say. As for my talent, I am merely borrowing it. Someday I'll have to return it on person to the Man who lent it, and I hope not some day too soon. Thanks for your post.

Nice knife!
I am in the process of making my first fixed blade knife. I have it back from heat treat and it is ready for a handle and final blade finishing and sharpening.
May I ask what you used to grind your blade? I have a cheap 1 x 30 belt sander and I am a bit leery to finish grind with it.

Thanks

What a nice little knife - the blade shape and size will be perfect for day-to-day use. I like the wood, as well.

I have a 2x42 Craftsman with several upgrades right now. I'm in the process of building a GIB and will move to it when I get it completed. The 2x42 is underpowered, but with some upgrades is perfectly serviceable. Runs fast though. Go slow with your 1x30, dip the blade every pass and you'll be ok. If it doesn't feel right, stop and reassess before moving forward.

Thank you. The pictures don't do the wood justice. Just wonderful in hand.

I like this one a lot Medic! The wood compliments the overall shape, the blade looks well suited for EDC tasks, and would be right at home in the kitchen too. One observation based solely on my personal tastes is that for me, a little more length to the handle would make this a go to knife in my kitchen for paring/ peeling duty. The length as as looks a good compromise for out and about pocket carry with the right sheath. This is in no way a critique, as I love the knife as is. Take a look at AG Russels site for the " Wooswalker" sheath, I could see that blade being right at home in it.
Well Done!! :thumbup::thumbup:

Thank you for the great advice. :)

Out of curiosity, I weighed it this morning. 0.9 oz. This thing is super light, and makes feather sticks like no other. I got bored at the park......
