INCREDIBLE!!!
I just got my Viele. The fit, finish and looks are great. The feel as I open and close the knife are great.
I ordered it along with a shotgun from wholesale source and unfortunatly they shipped the Spyder edge instead of the straight edge I wanted. (Oh well I'll just have to get a second one)

I have a Wayne Goddard lock back and to be honest I wasn't all that impressed. Not that it's a bad knife but as a lock back it just isn't as smooth as the Viele. I really like better materials in the scales.
The Micarta on the Viele is very very nice looking. I likethe way the side with the pocket clip is less finished as this side will take more of the abuse.

This is really one quality knife. :) :) :)

Hi Slicer! Welcome to BF. My favorite Spydie seems to be the Native (lately). I just used my Sharpmaker for the first time last night.

AND I FINALLY SHARPENED MY OLD ABUSED ENDURA! It's very happy now.

Now if you really aren't that impressed with your Goddard...if it's a lightweight Zytel handle model, I've been looking to buy one, and 1SKS was out of them...;)

Have fun here!

While I'm not all that impressed with the Goddard it seems that everyone is looking for one with the Zytel handle and mine has them :) . I will keep it because it is not replaceable and it is still a decent knife to use in rotation with my others.

Since I live in a rural area and generally can not see a knife before I buy what do you figure Spyderco makes in a lock back that is comparable in quality to the Viele ?

Most of the stores or gun shows only carry the lower priced models. I'm interested in the better knifes

Hi Slicer, Welcome. Quality in materials is directly proportionate to cost. FRN ( Fiberglass Reinforced Nylon) is an excellent material with strength at a lower cost. The hand work to do the finish work on models like the Viele just cost more.

Our Lockbacks are of equal quality to the Viele. The JD Smith is a good example of a quality Micarta Lockback. The action will be different on lockbakcs due to the different type of springs. Both have advantages and drawbacks. "All good, just different".

Sal,
Thank you for posting.
I understand the ratio in cost to materials. I beleive you honestly strive to make the best possible product in each particular price point. Some folks can't afford or justify a knife of over $100.00
I myself find that I am less pleased with a knife if I don't spend from $80.00 or up!
In all honesty I have yet to find a lock back that I have ever been really pleased with.

I find that the Viele liner lock I purchased is an excellent knife and has the finest fit and finish of any production knife I have ever owned and that even includes my benchmade 710. I was very surprised with the knife when I received it because my only other experience with Spyderco products had been the "Goddard"

I find myself looking through a catalog that I received from your excellent and knowledgable staff when I called and just drooling over the various offerings. Once I decide on my next purchase I will be ordering more of your products

Keep up the good work!

I have a "new-style" Endura, with the FRN handle, ATS-55 blade, and reversible pocket-clip, and I really like that knife! It feels great in my hand, and cuts like the devil. I really haven't noticed a problem with the "lockback" lock on this folder.:).
