I have always had a Hinderer XM-18 clipped to my right pocket, but I have always used a Queen 1095 trapper or a Case CV medium stockman for my cutting needs. I love the tight snap or the Queen especially.

I'm deploying for the first time at the end of October, and I have decided to pull the trigger on a Moore Maker large stockman in stag. I love carbon steel and stag. And Bulldog, simply did not cut it. I love the tight walk and talk of the Queen models, but rather have 1095 instead of D-2.

I will always carry the XM-18 and probably strap my 7 inch ST-56 Busse to my IBA, but I definitely will have a slip joint for most if not all my cutting needs.

Should I get 4 1/4 or the 3 7/8 stockman???

First of all good luck to you and thank you. i hope you stay safe out there. In terms of the knife, I would go with a 3 7/8 for better pocketability.

I'll second every bit that.
As for the Stockman, I agree with the 3 7/8" as well. In fact, my current favorite stockman is a 3 3/8".

Take care,

I have owned both and one thing to consider is that the blade stock on the 3-7/8" model is pretty thin, a lot thinner than the 4-1/4" model. Not necessarily a bad thing but depends on the uses...the thinner stock will do less heavy cutting, but on the plus side the knife overall is thinner so more pocketable.

The 3 7/8ths worked for me durring ten years serving with the army engineers, including a tour in Viet Nam. The Buck 301 did most everything one could ask of a pocket knife from 1967 to the early 90's when I retired it for something newer but not really better. A heck of alot of my fellow engineers also used a stockman. I liked the fact that the main clip was nice and thin for slicing, but the sheepsfoot was very sturdy and could be tapped with a hammer through things you could'nt cut like the thin metal bands around wood boxes the ammo came in.

Our nieces friend just came home from there, he was a sandbox sailor, and he said the handiest knife over there was a Leatherman tool.

Just bring your butt home in one piece so you can tell us how your choice worked out!

SInce I have already been over there once and preparring to go back over in a few weeks, this is what I have to offer knife wise. One, you have a have a Gerber, Leatherman or whatever. Trust me, if not you wish you did have one. As for fixed blade, I highly recommend a small 4-5" blade fixed blade with a good sheath. I just bought a Randal RAT (blackwater guys are issued this knives). The sheath, from what I can tell is really good, it holds onto the knife really well and I dont think that any slack will develope over time making it a long term carry option. Plus it has a good clip on it to attach to your MOLLE gear, holster, vest, belt, or whatever you would like. Hope this helps.

I'll go against the grain in the size recs so far... I favor the larger size just because it feels a little more substantial. I have both sizes, and almost always reach for the bigger one.

I'm quite the opposite. The stockman I usually carry is a Buck 373 Trio- same size as the 303 Cadet. To each his own:)

I have a swisstool that I carry around on my belt usually. It has been extremely useful, especially the pliars.

Thinner blades equal better cutting. Go with the smaller knife. Specially if you have the Swisstool for heavier jobs.
Just remember, you HAVE to come back ok. We all need to hear the stories of how it outcut the tacticools that I'm sure the other soldiers will have!! LOL
Seriously, though, watch your back and come back home in one piece, bro. Much luck and appreciation to you.

The multi-tool is a must have item here in the box. As for another blade I have a short Ka-Bar on my IBA and a Benchmade Griptilian clipped to my pocket. For lots of cutting chores I have recently obtained a Camillus electricians knife.

I also wear a Camillus ArcLite around my neck
