My Next Knife

Hey all,

I've used knives for years, but I am just getting in to collecting. So far, I have:

Sog Vulcan Tanto
Gerber Yari II
Sog Creed Bowie
Kershaw Junkyard Dog II Composite
A variety of older, cheaper blades.

I mostly cary the folders to work and in town. I carry the fixed blades while backpacking, etc., which is to say I carry them much less frequently (but I like them).

What should my next knife be? My budget is about $150.

NOTE: My next knife need not serve any specific purpose - I am just looking for good values / fun knives to add to my collection. If it is unlike what I already have, that's a bonus, but not necessary.

ANOTHER NOTE: In the interest of specificity, I like: Folders 3.5+ inches, Fixed 4+ inches, Handle: G10, Aluminum, Titanimum, Stainless = Blade: 1095 High Carbon or similar, or CPM D2, CPM 154, S30V, VG10, etc., -- slight preferance for tantos and/or more exotic blade designs. I know this isn't really specific, but I'm mostly looking for ideas. Thanks again!

Welcome to the forums. I could name many. Do you have any specifics your looking for. Like blade size, thumbstud, hole, auto, or assisted. Lock type etc....

I more just looking for ideas as to 'a lot of kife for the money' suggestions under $150. If it were a folding knife, I'd like it to be 3.5" or more, not auto, flipper/thumstuds, etc. If it were a fixed blade, 4+ inches, any variety.

My four current knives fill most all of my practical knife needs, so the next knife need not be purchased for practicality. Think of this as a "best buy for under $150 request" form an enthusiast / collector standpoint.

BM Dejavoo
Cold Steel TrailMaster or Laredo bowie
ZT MUDD
Spyderco Military

Just a few that I like. You really should get more specific, or your going to get hundreds of suggestions.

I think you would enjoy a ZT 200 or 350. I also think you would like a Benchmade 940 or if you want to spend less a Spyderco Salt series or a Cold Steel American Lawman or a Recon 1. Good Luck and welcome to the forums. Kevin :D

BM 710
BM Presidio
Spyderco Military
Spyderco Para Military
Spyderco Manix
Boker Exskelibur good bang for buck

I also love ZT. I have a few, but I love my 350. I have the CB version. If you can find it, i got mine for $140 new online. I don't know if you can get much more of a tank of a folder without getting a strider, which is nearly three times the cost. But the Elmax steel is impressive. Regardless the regular is s30v which is great. I use mine as my edc, and I can't say enough good things about it.

Also on the cheaper side, the Cold Steel folders in the $50-60 dollar range are impressive for their price. Aus8 doesn't hold the best edge, but its strong and easy to sharpen. All of their folders in that price range are great in general. So a little variety, the recon 1 is available in tanto. I dont have it but the Spartan looks like fun. So if you wanted to go cheaper, you won't be disappointed with Cold Steel's folders.

Can't overlook spyderco's either. They make great knives for around your price range and less.

Thanks all -- I am checking out the ZTs and liking them. Ditto the BM 940. I like the looks of the CS Recon 1, and its half the price, so that's appealing. Right now I am leaning towards one of the ZTs.

Would also recommend the ZT 0200. Got one in my pocket right now. The opening is as smooth as silk.

An alternative might be the Spyderco Chinook III.

How could I forget about the ColdSteel Triad lock knives? You could just about buy 3 of them for $150 if you look around some.

Welcome to the forums ... as they told me when I first joined ... watch your Wallet (LOL)

Surprised no one's mentioned a the Buck Vantage Pro yet. Good medium
size folder for $50. (you could get 3 :D) Not a Beefy as the ZT's, but no light weight either. Great materials and lifetime warr. Been my EDC since it arrived.

Enjoy the search.

The Benchmade 940 is a great option. Of course it's not as hard-use-worthy as the Zero Tolerances but otherwise it's extremely practical, slender, and portable.

Sent you an email

EDIT: The blade shape of the ZT 0200 Is just like the knife I email-ed you about. Custom Scales on my knife are seriously better than that ZT 0200. My blade has no serrations. And of course it is made by the same company "am I right" or not?? I am with-holding the knifes name because this is between me and the one wanting a new knife for his collection. But if anyone is curious email through this forum and give me your email address and I can send you the name and photos if you like. I am saying this all in private except for the description "a little" because this is the wrong sub forum to sell things.

But that Buck advantage pro is a very good knife for the online price. I love CPM-S30V and that knife looks nice also. Now you know about watching your wallet on this site. These guys have me looking at the Buck now. I do not like recurve or what ever you call that blade shape on the ZT knife.

A steel of a deal at what I told you.

Daniel
