I'm really liking this pattern. I'm uncertain as to size and pocketability (sp). Which of you traditionalist types carry one regularly? Good points - bad points?

I got this saddlehorn from Rick Menefee at Christmas and I've carried it almost every day since.

It's just over 3 1/2" and carries great in my pocket. The only thing I don't like is that I had to wait so long to get it! ;)

I MUCH prefer the single bladed saddlehorn over the two bladed for carry. You can pinch open most single blade saddlehorns (the blade sits up fairly high in the curved frame); they're slim and rounded and comfortable in the pocket; and the handles are some of the most comfortable and secure you'll find for use.

While I like the looks of the two bladed saddlehorn, the problem is that the large curve in the handle means the blades unavoidably sit up fairly high out of the frame -- so regardless of which blade you're using, the other is very much in the way of your grip and the ergonomics of the handle are completely lost. You also cannot pinch a two bladed saddlehorn open.

For pocketable size, I'd go for 3 3/8" to 3 3/4" closed.

even though if you'd have asked me a couple years ago if i liked 'em i'd have said, meh not for me.:)
Received mine as a gift, ended up loving it.
good luck and post some picts when you pull the trigger on one!

I haven't got one yet but I really like the ones that David Schott is making right now. I've always loved his fixed blades and these saddlehorns have some incredible lines.

I'm with Dwight...the single blade version is awesome as an EDC. (And I know he had one very similar to my own Chamblin pictured below).

I've never been one much for the look of them. Might have to try one someday just so I can know for sure if I like it or not.

I had a RR saddlegorn, nice knife with I abused and finally sold it because if the color and the china thingie
was a good knife IMO

the design is nice!

Got a CASE TB Saddlehorn in some very nice Bonestag 6.5. Size is compact, finish excellent but it would be better as a single blade. The secondary Skinner blade is not much to my liking. What is good is the curved Flintlock pistol handle, adapts well to the hand.

That Menefee that waglebee owns is a spectacular rendering, be a wonderful knife to have, particularly like the pin/shield arrangement.

Like others, I never found Saddlehorns all that appealing to the eye. To fully appreciate the Saddlehorn pattern you have to hold one. They feel great in the hand:thumbup:

I've had a few single blades by Joe Allen that were fabulous!

The one I have has a sweet blade shape to it. I like it, but I have not carried it because it is not sharp and I just haven't been motivated to fix the edge. I got it because I was intrigued by the pattern and love the blade.

Elliot, that jigging is amazing. Perhaps a dumb question but what do you call that shield?

Thanks, Mack...it is a great knife on a variety of levels.

Sorry to say, I can't help you as far as the specific name of that particular shield...perhaps Kerry, Dwight or one of the makers might know.

My best guess is that it would be considered as part of the class of shields known as crest shields. Beyond that...just dunno. :o

Thank you sir.
I was thinking maybe it was a Pontiac emblem.

Some of the original Case saddlehorns had a similar shield -- though with slightly convex sides down to the point instead of a straight V. Joel basically tightened up the shield design for his saddlehorns. I may have an image around somewhere of the original Case version.

I've always loved the look of the saddlehorn. Sadly only Case made one as far as I know. I am just not a fan of their stainless steel.

Easily my favorite looking knife from Rick to date, and he has had alot of very nice knives.

Until yesterday i wasn't a fan of the Saddlehorn pattern and only had 2, a Case and a Rough Rider. But a little while ago David Schott posted 2 Saddlehorns for sale here on BF. David is an established knifemaker but these 2 are some of his first Folders. I decided to buy one and try out both the pattern and the knifemaker. Am i ever pleased that i did. Picked it up yesterday and i'm very impressed. Comfy in hand, a very natural fit and Dave has put about the scary sharpest edge on it that i've ever experienced.
In pic below, i chose the Burgandy knife. I think the White handled one is still available.

this pic does not come close to showing how nice these knives are.
Great pattern and Great knife. I'm now converted to a Saddlehorn afficionado.
