My NIB pet peeve

I've heard a gazillion complaints here about NIB sharpness which I really think for a knifeknut is pretty silly - LEARN TO SHARPEN. But this type of thing really annoys me.

This is the most common example, a quarter to a half inch of blade starting at the ricasso on the right hand (holding knife in front of you, point facing away) side of the blade with a screwed up bevel. As you can see this will take many many many sharpenings for it to disappear. I've had this so many times on knives from manufacturers who are well regarded. Give me a knife that won't cut butter but please, I beg you, keep the bevels even. I would rather have a completely unsharpened edge than this.

I can agree with ya. My Boker Trance and RAT Izula came like that, new. The Izula's bevels were definitely uneven all the way up the blade. I sold it to a friend because it was too small for my hand(s) anyway.
 
Well, I wouldn't want a knife completely unsharpened, but I agree with you the bevels really need to be even. By the way, I just took down my Izula to look again and the bevels are so perfect it's freaky. :)
 
Probably half of the knives I get are uneven, some more than others. Tho ones that are dull, very uneven or both get reprofiled ASAP. The ones that are very sharp and uneven get reprofiled when they need sharpening. The perfect ones never get a chance to get dull. They are kept sharp. After awhile these get reprofiled too. The bottom line is as theonew stated, all knife knuts need to learn to sharpen. The skill will save a lot of time and headaches.
 
Thats one reason I prefer to by local; it gives me a chance to go through and pick the best grinds.

If I do order on-line I usually E-mail requesting them to check the blade grinds before shipping. I haven't had a problem since I started doing it.

Actually, sharpening addiction has its own headaches and knifeknuts become sharpening nuts way too easy.

That is the dark flip side indeed. I've been working on it. Last weekend I went away for three days, brought one knife, used it quite a bit and didn't bring any sharpener. By Monday the bottom of my coffee mug was looking very tempting but I didn't give in :D

Yes, when your sharpening stone and gear wish list is more expensive than your knife wish list you know you have a terminal case. I just got my 16000 grit Shapton Glasstone and am dying to use that thing. I also find myself cutting way more than I need to just so I can sharpen more.

The blade starting at the ricasso is thicker and you should try to sharpen that first 1/4 inch the first time, hard to do and make look right. If you had a notch in the blade at the ricasso, you would not have this. Not making excuses for the maker it's just hard to do.

Thank the Blade Gods we have this online support group. Otherwise I'd probably be passed out in a gutter somewhere most nights.
