I decided to start my own thread on what I'm doing with the forged blade I bought from Nick Wheeler.

To recap, here's what I started with:

I decided to keep the lines Nick forged in:

Then I finished the primary bevels:

Next I started thinking about my handle solutions:

Today I sanded the bevels to 150 grit:

Found a problem at the tip (mismatch between the sides, not tapered enough), went back to the file and corrected it, then started the sanding all over again, then pushed it up to 600 grit. Now It's ready for heat treatment, so off to PA it goes.

You might want to square up those shoulders a little before sending for HT.
Is the little check we see at the base of the spine a trick of the light?

Oh you mean the bolster you posted? I did not think this was the final bolster shape, sorry.
I still don't understand why you need a notch in the back though. But it's ok, no need to explain, I am just too slow. I'll see when the knife is completed.

It's not the final form, but the shape is essentially correct. The notch insures proper alignment of the bolster and the antler. The notch will disappear when the assembly is complete.

Since sending the blade out for HT I have turned my attention to carving the final form of the bolster/guard. This is an ambitious project (my code speak for another one that stretches me past my present abilities). I've only begun the carving, so you can't really see what I'm aiming for yet. I'm doing the carving with small files... not quite needle files, but pretty close. I like the progress I've made so far, and will post pictures before I head off to my next business trip and see if you can guess what it will become.

Blade looks good so far. Me want that piece of wood ya got it sitting on, though. ;) :)

Ah, the wood. That's a piece of driftwood I found, then scraped and sanded and rubbed with butcher block conditioner. It's not really useful for handle material, but I thought it made a pretty good backdrop for photos.

I haven't had much time to make progress on this, but I did do some work between conference calls, and a little this morning before we head out for a day of activity.

Honestly, I'm losing track of time. I've been making so many business trips lately I can't keep track of how many weeks are passing. Looks like I sent it out on the 7th, so just over three weeks away.

I got a bit distracted by the KITH project and didn't get around to finishing this one. Here's the last look at what became of Nick Wheeler's forged blade project.

Tryppyr

How does it do that? When you lay it on one side the background is grass (maybe), and when you flip it over the background changes to exposed aggregate concrete! That bird is MAGIC!

It turned out very well indeed.
