My OD1 just broke...

I was just flipping my OD1, and the flipper mechanism broke. The knife no longer fully opened, and the stud kind of rattled disconnectedly. I opened it up, but I can't tell what went wrong. Does anything look out of place here? Is the lever supposed to be set in there?

What happened, so far as I can tell, is the lever somehow skipped off of one of the pegs inside the handle, like this:

If this is how it is by design, I'm not sure I trust the OD1. I just got it back from Kershaw because of a missing ball detent, and I really like the knife, but I can't bring myself to carry a knife that can spontaneously stop functioning. Is my knife just faulty?

Out of the many OD-1's that I've played with, none have had that issue. I've had my orange one ever since the orange one came out, and I've EDC'ed it for around a month in the past--never an issue. Smooth as silk, opens every time. No detent issue (issues are easily fixed by having fun with the lock-bar spring strength, just a matter of a couple trial and errors. )

Maybe the handle screws weren't tight enough? Can we get a side shot so we can see how much coverage that space is getting for that pin that resides there?

The detent pressure wasn't an issue, really, it was more the lack of a ball bearing.

The screws may not have been completely tighten down in it allowing for just enough room for the piece coming down from the flipper to jump over the peg attached to the blade.

I just put it back together, tightened the screws all of the way, and it failed first try. I took it apart again, took some pictures, tightened all of the screws as tight as I could get them, and took a video of the fail (first try again):

I guess it's back to Kershaw for the second time.

Kershaw will definately make it right, and will probably send you a new one.

I was always skeptical of the way the lever is held on. Seems like there should be another screw holding the g10 scale down up there.

Interesting photos! I have not taken mine apart, so these photos are enlightening.

I wonder why the button on the blade that engages with the flipper is not a little taller? It seems that it would not slip off as easily.

it might be the angle, but it almost looks like there is more space between the blade and the handle scale liner, which would make the pin seem shorter. is it assembled with a washer in the wrong place?

Just from looking down the knife, I can tell it has a washer on each side of the blade, and the blade is equally spaced on both sides. Is that how it's supposed to be arranged?

It looks like a defect to me, compare yours with the good one, yours looks rounded at the top; the good one has very sharp edges at the top. Send it back to Kershaw, they'll make it right for you.

From the info you've posted, it appears that Kershaw may have sent you a completely new knife to resolve the detent issue. The OD-1 is one of the best values on the market imo.

Yes, it's a new knife. I'm 0-2 as far as OD1s go :grumpy:

I guess I'll send this one back in, but maybe I'll ask if I can have a different model sent to me. The OD1 doesn't seem to be working out for me.

Kershaw, as I thought they would be, is willing to let me have another knife of my choice, presumably of equal or lesser value, sent back in place of my OD1. You can always count on Kershaw's warranty service to make things right!
