My OFFICIAL 1st Becker Thread (w/pics)

Well, I'm slowly whittling away at my prospective "Beckerhead" requirements... been trying to make substantial, relevant posts in various threads but have hitherto yet to make progress on the requisite creation of the minimum of 5 threads in the Becker forum. This is my feeble initial attempt at such.

Recently I had the occasion to hold a "camp-out" (in a manner of speaking) to inaugurate my new Becker collection and also just to casually practice at my meager bushcraft skills (such as they are ) My opportunities for meaningful outdoor excursions in beautiful and interesting venues sorely lacking, it seems the S.W. corner of my backyard must currently suffice, nearby neighborhood noise and all... there's a narrow peninsula of wooded area adjoining my yard and over the period of a month or so I managed to piece together a little "mini-campsite" in said corner for said functions, which to many here would likely be regarded as Playskool in functional quality! :p
Still, it gave me opportunity to erect a humble Harbor Freight tarp and practice such rope/cordage skills as bowlines, truckers hitches, prussic, fisherman's, and taunt-line knots.

I even attempted to provide some pictorial documentation of the moment, ahem, to less than stellar results... the unfortunate result of having to rely on one's smartphone and a 10 year old Sony Cyber-shot. Please overlook the subsequent self-images of yours truly; as one who staunchly covets his privacy and eschews all forms of social media (BladeForums being the exclusive exception) this thread will indeed be the rarest of occasions that my person is publically revealed!

Somehow missed the shot of the BK-9 cleaving the oak into a proper quarter.

Doing my best attempt at feather-sticking with the TOPS B.o.B....Stick came from unknown tree species growing in my back yard...Don't know what kind of tree it is, but it was harder than Calculus! :grumpy:

Due to the dreaded disease: monetary anemia I was unable to acquire the desired field stones for a proper fire pit so I resorted to be content with a few broken garden-variety (pardon the pun) paving stones I found lying dejected under my back porch; surely they now enjoy a sense of usefulness and worth in their newfound life!

The wife thought I was nuts (more'so than usual) when she saw me toss the sirloin roast steaks onto the coals, but she came around after tasting the end result!

Turned out to be some simple, spontaneous fun in the ol' back yard... the Missus had a great time and wants to do it more often. I'm hoping we can set aside some time in the not-too-distant future and go on a REAL outing...someplace nice with real scenery and the quiet solitude of nature.

Congrats on a fine first thread. Damn that food looks good.

Love the thread! My favorite posts are the ones outdoors with knives and food! I just got my BH # myself and the hoops weren't too bad to jump through. I makes posts in the outdoors all the time!

Great thread!
Thanks for sharing Lone Wolf.
Those steaks do look good!

Knice! That wood you are feathersticking looks like fogwood to me... the old found-on-ground wood.

Shit man, don't apologize for doing stuff in your backyard. We've all got to practice somewhere!

This is a damn fine thread! Good on you for getting out and learning/practicing! Backyard or 30 miles into the middle of nowhere, learning and practicing your skills is always worthwhile.

Agreed, excellent first post :).

I also appear to have a similar strain of monetary anemia. My Becker collection isn't much larger than yours, and I've been around here a fair bit longer than you have. So don't worry, you'll fit right in :).

And, I must say, you have an amazing backyard.

This is fantastic, what a great first post! You have set the bar high.

My first post here was not too long ago and it is rather pale in comparison. Definitely hoping to see more from you in the future.

Nice thread and great outing, nothing more fun than having a wooded area right in your backyard, way cool! Love how you thought out and put everything together and made it 'happen'! Love the 9er!
Greetings from Montana! =)

Right on, with a backyard like that it looks like your out in the middle of the woods. I would love a backyard like that 👍

my town is not very forgiving on certain kinds of fires (no chimeny, more than 2x2, yearly permits required, and limited burn times...)

but one tries :D

Thanks for all the great support and encouragement everyone! :)

The exemplary caliber of folks here on B.F. and the Becker forum in particular is what sets it apart from the various other community sites I've personally had dealings with. The welcoming, encouraging and ethical brotherhood displayed here is instrumental in my continued participation. Looking over my stats it's apparent I've not proactively contributed much here in the 10 years since joining; not due to any failings of the forum but simply, as I mentioned, I'm not a very socially outgoing personality- the vast majority of my time aboard I'm content to be a silent observer soaking up the multiplied wealth of human knowledge and experience. Thank you all for helping me feel at liberty to open myself up to public exposure and feel more confident that I too may have something worth sharing.

Looks like a fine backyard. Ive cooked potatoes and corn by tossing them on the coals, but never a steak. Great pics. and the tiger stripe camo brings back some good memories. Thanks for sharing.
