This is my old/new Oak & Brass Buck 110.
I got this a few years ago from Copper & Clad. It came with a 5160 blade, and recently I noticed some pitting near the tip of the blade and along the spine.
I sent it to Buck and they sent it back to me with a brand new S30V blade.
The fit is perfect and it's easier to open and close than is usual with a new blade.
Couldn't be happier, thank you Buck!

The color of the oak has darkened with time but it is somewhat lighter than it appears in these pictures.

They replaced a carbon steel knife because of pitting?

And they installed a s30v blade in it's place?
Under warranty....?

Huh.

I was told by one rep I spoke to that they were not building any knives with any 5160 blades at this time.
If a knife with a 5160 blade needed a new blade they were replacing with S30V.

That's a real shame.

Regardless of the particular steel, 110's with a stainless blade are a dime a dozen.
Buck doesn't offer very many superior knife blades that will patina right along with the brass.

I feel quite differently. I'm pleased with the knife I have now.
Patina is one thing. Pitting that compromises blade integrity is another.
I'll gladly leave those blades to you.

Edit: I don't like patina on my brass either.

Some carbon steel rusts if I look at it the wrong way, but not 5160. I even had to force the patina on mine because I was impatient. How did it get so pitted that it needed to be replaced? I'm just curious.

I think it's sad you lost that blade because it's so unique, but S30V is great and it's more expensive than 420HC, so well done.

Here is my 5160.

I beg to differ.

This is a 5160 110 blade that pitted real good from a little too long in the French's

I'd send Buck every 5160 110 I have if they'd trade them for S30V.

Nothing wrong with 5160. I have 2 110s still NIB with 5160. I just prefer stainless for my users.

Wow that’s super good service!

I agree about carbon steels. I’ve had some that pitted really bad and I live in a fairly arid climate . I don’t know if maybe if it’s my skin or body chemicals or what but I kept them oiled and dry and they still rust pitted in various places. I stick with stainless or at least semi stainless now.

No wonder we don't see more 5160 knives that are not slathered in Cerakote.
Sigh.
