So I bought a 1999 specwar from the knife exchange pretty cheap, I am hoping its real. It was in pretty rough shaap and had some custom work that the owner did himself that was not bad but I bought it with doing a full custom mod knife becuase I dont want to change my many awsome like new stock EKI's.

Plan: ( feel free to make any suggestion as I am open on this one to try new things and see how it comes out and share)

1. REK regrind with a acid/stone washed finish blade with some sort of etching like skull etch or rek lable not sure.
2. Ti thumb disc
3. Nath Pivot
4. Nath custom pocket clip.
5. Rayster Scales and Backspacer ( raised gear ) not sure what color thinking lime green or regular green like the pdw specwar or a distressed micarta in od green.. Hey maybe a lime green with a set of orange liners on the hamdles as well as backspacer.
6. new hardware
7. blasted liners or polished not sure

So as you can tell alot up in the air... Should be cool though with BF members input.

Ill post pics of how it sits now .. I have played with it a bit and its kinda hacked ..

So what did you decide to do? Do you have a website for REK? I'd like to see some of their work.

So guys let me know what you think...Any input is good. One thing I found out working on this old school EKI was both liners are infact ti. I guess the earlier models had dual ti liners so I am going to bronze them with heat ( with my trusty map torch ). I am now thinking a distressed od green canvas micarta with tan liners and a od g10 spacer would set off the bronze and bronze all the hardware...On top of the acid/stonewashed blade would look sick..

So just got a text from Josh at REK and my specwar blade is done. Josh does a great job and I could not be happier with the service and care. I had him acid /stone wash the blade then restore the chisel grind and he micro beveled the flat side. Here are the links to my photo bucket pics

this first pic is of the blade before it went to josh at REK. I stripped most of the black coating off before it went out.

So hoping my scale choice will do the blade justice.. I am making my own micarta scales for this one just to see if its what I want.. Still going to have rayster357 make a set , but he is booked solid at the moment.

From the pics it looks like you did a good job on those scales (Emersons look great in OD). Together with that blade should make a great knife... Looking forward to seeing it finished

So update... Got the blade back from Josh at REK. I am super impressed with the REK work. Ill be sending Josh more work very soon. So I have not finished the scales, I still need to cut the counterbore, still need to get a counterbore cutter or an endmill for the drill press. I decided to put the knive together with the scales that came with the knife. They are pretty rough but they will be replaced soon. So I thermo anodized the hardware and I think it all looks really good. I also heated up the liners to a light bronze that I really like... Well let me know what you all think.

So first link is to the pic before any work and the REK treatment.

Well I had some free time today. So finished up this 99 specwar project. Keep in mind I bought this knife already modified. Sadly the mods were less than desirable. So I figured I would use this to learn some new tricks and see if I could bring it back from the EKI graveyard. Not sure but I think I did. Interested in what you folks think.

I deviated from the plan a bit becuase I was not sure investing alot of money and time would be worth it due to some of the mods done when I purchased it. Some one had ground down the lines a bit etc. So I decided to keep it some what simple and do most of the work myslef.

First thing was the blade, as I have already shown Josh at REK did the blade work. I found it to be really nice and frankly is pretty cool looking but also useful.

So once the blade was off I started making the scales took a while and came out pretty good for my first time.

I refinished all the hardware with a duller satin finish for bronzing. Again I think it came out good, I polished the washer contact areas making it super smooth and also lightly bronzed the liners.Oh and finished the pocket clip in a satin/bronze..

Well its done .. I may toss it up in the Knife Exchange for trade due to the fact I prefer the plain edge knives and like to get new stuff lol .. But we shall see it makes a great addition to my ever growing EKI collection.

Hey Rayster357 anyway you can post these pics up from links..just this once!

Hey Rayster...I decided I should upgrade to gold member status so I can post pics.. Thanks again for all the help..

On topic:

I usually carry my mini 15 when going for my daily run today. I grabbed the 99 sw and its actually lighter and carries well when running. Its really growing on me and I came home from the run and did some fine tuning ..Increased the relief for the thumb disk for better deployment ..Works great and its really smooth..

Thanks all for the kind words!
