I was wondering if any one could tell me why
my bowie snapped into? The break is about an
inch or so past the guard in the thick part of the blade. It snapped when I ws making kindling out of a half-inch thick piece of oak flooring. I used it for years, doing heavy work with it and never had a problem.
One odd thing, the inside of the broken steel looked a little crystalline. Any ideas?

Conajhara,
We will need to see your Bowie to have any idea why it broke[actually we may never know]. I can say that we don't have may returns on that item, its built like a tank. Depending on the age, we may or may not have made the knife. It may have been made by the old WESTERN CUTLERY company, before they went bankrupt. We have since purchased them[about 1990] and continued the production in our plant in NY.
Technically we don't warranty the knives that were made before we took over the company, but since that is hard to tell sometimes, we do everything we can to help the customer. If you will call 800-344-0456 and speak to Wendy, please reference this post and she will give you a return autherization number. Send the knife in, and we will see what we can do for you[this usually means you get a new knife].

Give Wendy a call, and let us take a look at your knife. We should be able to fix you right up!

Hello Will! I will give Ms. Wendy a call and send in the Bowie. If this helps any, I got this one in 1982, it has the kind of sheath that pivots on a D-ring on the beltloop.
Thanks for your trouble!

hows THAT for great service!!!

Conajohara,
If you got the Bowie in '82, it was made in Colorado by Western before they went out of business. CAMILLUS purchased the tooling and the brand name out of bankruptcy in 1988-89 [the exact date escapes me] . I'm not sure of the steel used or the heat treat, but I think it was carbon steel. We will take a look at it when it gets here.
