here is the only custom knife i have.
i did not do it,but had a friend rescale one side for me from a picture i had drawn.
i am trying to get a belt sander now and a scroll saw to start making some knives.
if i ever get good at it i will post some pictures.
till then i have this on one of my favorite single blade frames.

That is a nice nice knife, but itis NOT a custom knife. It is a production knife with custom scales.I do like the new sales.

Moving from Custom & Handmade to the Gallery ... as T.K.C. says, it's customized, not a true custom, which would be done by one knifemaker from start to finish.

Beautiful knife, though. The picture even of the original side made me want one! :)

would it be considered custom if i bought a blade blank and made everything from there?
or does the maker have to alsio make the blade steel?

where would i post a knife that i built from ground up only someone else made the blank?
thanks,
jd

a custom knifemaker is not someone who smelted their own steel but rather someone who individually handcrafted the knife rather than in a factory making thousands of the same knife. Although there are makers out there who dug up their own ore and created their own steel. Your knife was made in a factory where tens of thousands of blades were stamped out then assembled on a assembly line. Check out the folders for sale in the Makers section to get a feel for what a custom handmade knife is

To be a Custom & Handmade knife for our purposes, you would have to make the blade, but not necessarily make the steel. Some knifemakers do make their own damascus, but that's a process of taking other steels and forging them into one.

Buying a blade and putting a handle on it is making a kit knife, and it's a great first step towards custom work, but ultimately you would have to take a blank piece of steel and file or forge it to shape as a blade for us to consider it custom work.
