About a year ago I won a giveaway hosted by our friend Fausto and he sent me an Opinel #7 in carbon (thanks again Fausto!)

It was a very unusual knife for me and I wasnt exactly sure what to do with it. But i spent alot of time reading opinel threads and opinel modding threads and spent quite a bit of time thinking about what I wanted to do with it.

None of these mods are huge or anything, but modding knives is new to me, so i am pretty stoked about it...

First i shaved the handle to a more comfortable shape. I noticed in doing so, the clip point of the blade stuck out, so i had to carve the wooden liner down so i could get the blade to close. This was time consuming but finally worked.

Then i decided I wanted an easy open notch. Which i proceeded to carve out with my rough rider barlow :D
It actually looks like i took too much off, but i wanted to make sure I could pinch the blade open even with gloves on, so thats why its so big

Then I decided to sand off the finish, kinda orangish. I re-stained it with a rosewood stain i found at Ace Hardware. It took a couple of attempts, but i got it to where I am happy with it. Stained, sanded it with 0000 grade steel wool and re-stained and re-sanded. I think it brings out the grain pretty good

Finally, i decided to file down the clip point into more of a drop point shape. It was done by hand with a file. So its not perfect or anything, but it does fit inside the liner when i close it a little better and i like it

Oh and last night sanded down the blade attempting to sand out the grind marks, but i just didnt have the patience to do it right, but i dont think its going to affect use all that much, also i stuck it in a cup of apple cider vinegar for about 30 minutes to force a patina.

Anyways, it was a year in the making and I am pretty happy with it
so here is a few pics

thanks guys!
i like that for its size, its sooo light

and its thin blade cuts very very well, as well or better than some of my sharper knives if i am being honest (and now that its sharpened its scary sharp!)

Ryan,
when I sent you the Opinel, I hoped that you would at least give it a try (I knew it was your first Opinel).
I'm really glad to see that it grew on you, and that you've come to appreciate it, and give it your personal touch.
One more member of the club

That's pretty nice, still looking pretty much like an Opinel but with small improvements to make it how you want it. It looks like you have managed a very professional looking job on that handle!
On my Opinels the only change I've made is to sit a small lump of beeswax on the pivot end and then use a lighter to melt it. The result is some degree of waterproofing around the pivot end and easier opening & closing.

I really love these Opinel knives, they are such a cheap & simple design and yet they are VERY capable. Seriously, one piece of wood, a collar & pin, locking ring and a blade - viola, a very cheap to manufacture, easy to use knife. But despite the low price these things cut better than many expensive knives. For this kind of money there are some really rubbish knives available with junk stainless steel and poor fit & finish OR Opinel with no blade play and an ability to slice like you wont believe. I see a certain beauty in the simplicity of these knives.

Very nice. I'm quite fond of the large notch. It reminds me of the EZ Open variation on some traditional knives.

Nice work... I;m a long time fan of Opis.... (they take wicked edges don;t they?) I just started modding a No. 8 tonight based on your inspiration... Nice work and Thanks

Thanks guys,
yeah its a fun little knife, i like it

glad my mod's were able to inspire others, thats pretty cool :D

Nice project, looks great! Personally, I just deal with the stuck blade in the old-fashioned, traditional way: le coup de savoyard. Hold it by the virobloc, tap it against a hard surface (side of your boot or elbow works), and voila, the blade comes out just enough to grab.
