Hello all! Ive been reading BF for a couple years now and decided to finally create an account and post something. I decided I really wanted to start with the mysterious new Hen and Roosters, so, here we go...
We've all heard all the he said, she said about H&R over the last few years but I've actually got some experience with trying to collect the stag handled ones over a couple of years and my trial and error in doing so might shine a little light on them for us all. I had to just return one to a big time dealer we all know well, and they were very nice about it and completely understood. (They said this is happening more often) The issue was the knife I ordered was an actual Solingen Germany made knife with Solingen price, but ended up getting sent a knife of the same pattern but with a different shield, tang stamp, and overall obvious difference in quality. (This has happened to me twice now.) As of right now I still don't know where these cheaper ones are being made. Some say Spain on them and some don't say anything. I can only assume the ones that don't say anything might be China or Pakistan for obvious quality issues. Frost owns H&R and are having some made by Klaas in Solingen and the others made by WHO KNOWS?! (I follow Klaas on some social media and know that they make some of them.) Some of these lower end knives I am seeing are SERIOUSLY bad. Weird recurve grinds, bad steel, gaps in liners, gaps in handles, and stag that you would swear is plastic. But the actual Solingen made ones are as good as you would expect, and you do really get your moneys worth. I guess I just wish we could be openly told where all these are coming from under the same name of H&R, because it really is misleading. With all that said I am NOT trashing Frost. I just want to give my experiences.

>>Tips on lower end H&R - Comes in a LIGHTER GREEN box that does NOT say Solingen, Germany on the front. Does NOT say Solingen Germany on tang stamp. Has a shield that goes HORIZONTALLY with the knife.

>>Tips on higher end German H&R - Comes in a DARK GREEN box that DOES say Rostfrei - Solingen, Germany on the Front. It DOES say Solingen Germany on tang stamp. Has a shield that goes VERTICALLY with the knife.

(Remember that even if you order a true German one from the pictures you see, it still might not be the one you get sent from dealers. And as soon as you get it...you will know. So be observant.) In closing...I really would like to see a historical brand like Hen and Rooster turn around and be the hen and rooster we all want and love....I just hope its not too late with all of this trickery (it seems).

Whew...thanks for reading, and it feels good to officially have a chair on the porch!

Welcome fellow Okie!
Nice first post!

Welcome, Okla. I too am a new member that has spent most of his time lurking.
Very interesting to see that’s how the cookie crumbles. A few have told me that it’s better to aim for vintage H&R but it seems that won’t be the case as long as I’m diligent of where the knife came from. I believe Boker has the same issue with their Tree Brand line of knives. You could get some real lemons but catch one from Solingen and you got a cracker on your hands

Good first post. But if you could post some pictures to clearly define what you are talking about; it would really help me. Why? Because your post will outlive you. And everyone that reads it will now say - "I don't want one of those light green HR boxed knives!" What you said it fairly clear, but it will be mis-read from time to time. And, most of what you are talking about are boxes, so secondary market sellers may just throw away the boxes. Also, you are talking current day products as well. Things have changed over time. So, although I don't see anything wrong with your post - and am actually glad to see this subject discussed - let me make a few points as well.

1) Lighter green is a legitimate color from days gone by, but as the OP mentions, Solingen Germany will be on the box. The new lighter green he speaks about is a very glossy lighter green.
2) I have seen German HR's with horizontal shields. And they fall out from time to time and may just go back in horizontal. Also, have seen some thinner or older patterns with no shield.
3) The dark boxes were used for carbon and stainless; so some will not say "Rostfrei".

If you get a chance post a picture of the box and tang differences. I will try and remember to post a picture of a legit light green box.

Good information - thanks!

Thank you all for the warm welcome. I do appreciate it. knifeswapper brings up some good points here. You're right that this post will be here forever so I would like to make some things a little more clear.

I am only speaking out on MY OWN opinions and research of BRAND NEW Hen and Roosters that I have purchased from 2016, to today (2019). I am not speaking of older H&R's, as a lot of them didn't even have shields, like you mentioned, when they were owned by A.G., Voss, etc. As far as the whole horizontal/vertical shield thing goes on the newer ones. I have just PERSONALLY noticed the ones with shields going vertically with the knife to be better quality, and from following Klaas on social media I have discovered those are the only ones they are putting out so they are definitely coming from Germany. They are also only shipping them out with Solingen Germany on the tang stamp and only shipping them out in the dark green boxes that say Solingen Germany on them (whether they say "rostfrei" stainless or not. I probably shouldn't have put that in there). I will also note that there is a noticeable difference of the actual hen and rooster logo on the vertical shields, compared with the horizontal shields.

Please bare with me guys. Like I said I just now started posting, and as soon as I figure out how to post dad gum pictures on here, I will actually be able to SHOW you what Im trying to say lol. Thank you guys

Try using an image hosting site, like Imgur. Many of us use it. Upload your pics, copy the BBCode and paste into the text box. If you are using a smartphone it's a little more difficult. There are some threads on posting pics in the Tech Support forum, https://www.bladeforums.com/forums/tech-support-general-q-a-site-feedback-more.679/.

Thank you for the help Peregrin! Here are a few examples and the differences I was talking about.

I'm glad I could help someone Eli Chaps Eli Chaps . At the end of the day I don't want to turn anybody away from the current brand, but I DO want to let people know whats going on with buying newer H&R's right now. I don't want to label it "being shady"...but...it kinda seems shady ;)

Completely understood. I would absolutely buy from a trusted source like knifeswapper knifeswapper .

Your post just educated me to be aware and careful. :)

I purchased an H&R wharncliffe whitler a while back. The quality was very poor. The main blade was pitted, the secondaries had a lot of side play. I sent the knife back for credit and got a nice rosewood Boker congress whittler. I was told that "made in Germany" can mean assembled from parts made elsewhere. Does anyone know if that is true?
