My own Becker parang

Well, as close as I can get.

I grabbed one of the ZK series currently on sale. The Swabbie ($46 right now at Kabar) is a huge blade but suffers (in my opinion) from a serious case of the mall ninja uglies.

After some planning I decided to create a US made parang. I own several Maylasian made parangs which served as a guide.

After about two hours I have this, and I am happy. I only shortened the blade .6 just enough to remove the stabbing point and round the nose.

I'd love to see Kabar produce this exact knife or have Mr Becker work his magic on one but make it a high saber grind as opposed to the full flat grind it has. Is would be a chopping beast.

Thats actually fantastic. Personally I would just take the hook off and soften the nub and call it a day. Hows she chop ?

Nice work.
I love seeing threads like this.

Chops hard, but it's a little handle heavy compared to a traditional parang. Removing the tip allows for a better angle and more use of the entire blade.

This. I would grind the nub all the way off personally.

I might still do that but I kept it because traditional parangs have the hooked handle as well. Removing the guards allows for tons of hand room. I can grab 3 full fingers ahead of the first handle bump.

I wasn't talking about the hook on the end. I would leave that as well. I mean this nub:

I'm probably going to strip it as well. Right now all the edges have had their coating removed.

Oh I see. I didn't want to grind into the handles. I know that nub bothers some users but I've got no issues with it. It's kind of like the ring on a Nepalese kukri. Works best with the two finger grip and the snap cut technique.

I always wondered how that worked out. Looks like it's in the way, but perhaps not.

I was resisting temptation but that's one sweet clearance item. Don't know if I'll mod, gift or keep it.

Eh, just wax the shiny bits along the spine and handle, and go beat it up! It looks really good, I just went back to compare to the absurd original. This was a brilliant move.
