Since it`s starting to look like I will be out of orders by September, I`ll be doing things differently. I will only be stocking a few of the more popular sizes of blade and handle materials, which means a lot of models will be dropped from my line, including all of the Hawks, and larger Camp models. I figure this will cut costs by not having to order the special materials, just keeping the basics.

Times aren't easy right now. I love knives and would have a hundred if I had the funds. The fact is I could get by just fine with only the Otter Creek if I had to. I am blessed that I don't have to. I hope things pick up for you John.

Models that will be dropped will be:

Kentucky Woodsman
Trapline
Galley Wag
Improved Bowie
Vermont Hunter
Scout
The Beast
All the Hawks

For handles, most of the woods will be dropped.

It sucks not being able to support my favorite maker, times are tight for a lot of us it seems.
Keeping just the best selling/basic materials in stock is good business sense, here's hoping things pick up for all of us.

I`m thinking of a "JK Basic Line", only available in black canvas micarta. Kind of a Model T, you can have it in any color, as long as it`s black.

I mean I understand what your saying however September is 2 months away. I know some makers that would love to have that many orders. I think some folks just don't like the wait time so they wait till your a month out or so and place them. Then next thing you know your 2 months out again.

I think just dropping knives from your line up is not the best decision. Keep the pattern and if someone wants one order the materials. It gives folks lots of options.

You make some dang good knives and I'm sure business will pick up

I agree with Myke, and see Grunts point, only two months of work with a family to look after is a scary thing and a fair concern, even if it is a hard won and earned good thing. As someone who works by contracts that don't "have" to be renewed every couple of months I can relate a small amount I thin. Drives me out of my head on occasion (Normally I go play with knives to calm down.)

Only though I have is mayeb keep them in the line up and charge extra for the more rare materials, longer wait time or no depending on your order list? you're prices are low enough i think you'd still be the best bang for the buck around.

Actually only about 5 - 6 weeks of work left. Peter has a good idea, maybe wait until I have more than one order for the odd sizes, so I don`t buy 3 feet of it and have 2 feet laying around catching dust.

Rather than drop the models, how about making what you want and posting them for sale? I also like the idea of waiting for a few of that style before you do them, just let the ones know there may be some time before they are produced.

Several makers do this on BF. Another idea is to have a signature knife with sheath options and make available with many handle materials; people may want to collect multiples of it. ( got the idea from Chris Reeves many designs of handles on his model 21).

I'm in the same boat as Curth- if I had the funds I'd have a lot of knives.

I like the idea of still offering them. You just have to wait till you have enough orders to justify ordering the materials.

Whatever you decide I hope orders increase.

...For handles, most of the woods will be dropped.

Will ironwood continue to be one of the available woods? I ask because I would like to have matching handles on my JK Knives and plan to buy more after we complete the Tool and the custom. If ironwood won't be available, I would like to change my orders to something that you will continue to carry in stock - if that is possible - so I can place later, matching orders.

I do hope things pick up for you John. The economy is just tough right now.

Since ironwood is my favorite, it will remain. What I`m trying to avoid is ordering handles one set at a time, shipping would kill me!

The blade you made me is one of my
Favorites and I'm not afraid to lend it to someone to use, knowing it will come back in one piece. I don't think you should drop anything. Do you do your own website design? You should start a page with handle materials, blade materials, tip type, blade type/thickness. Pin types and such. Open it up to the general public and advertise. It would be ashame to take off your blades from the world.
