Hello,

I decided to put together a little kit if some of the essentials I may need when I go up to the mountains to gather mushroom, rocks, sheds, etc...

It is all nicely contained inside this bag that I use to keep my reloading tools in fir my sidelock.

Just a large poncho, paracord, svord peasant, folding keyhole saw, sharpening stone, strop, strike anywhere matches, fire stick, and some chewable cubes.

Wicked Sharp: it can be either, I sewn belt loops on and can weave a shoulder strap easily. I prefer shoulder though.

CampingSurvival: I bought this heavy duty mesh bag so spores will fall to the ground

Thomas Linton: the tin contains fatwood, dryer lint, charcloath, lighter, and matches.

I stand (actually sit) corrected. Your strop is virtually identical to those my shop makes....(It's still a very nice strop:thumbup:)

Cool kit with an old school flair! I carry something similar as well when I scout the federal land around my cabin. I always make to carry a compass and a method to purify water as well. I love the Sawyer Mini with the squeeze bag. It costs $20 and weighs a couple ounces but works great. I've used mine for many gallons and it's still running strong!

Ya, this is pretty much where I'm at also. Just a few basic essentials on light romps. I got myself semi lost once and got out with the help of a pin on ball compass, that I could look down at on my jacket. I came out about half a mile from were I went in. But I did get back to the rural road\ small group of farms were I started, and tried to get out to.

I really suprised myself 2 weeks ago: I parked my Jeep (and left it running) to grab an SD card from a trailcam near my stand that is less than 100 yards from a small overgrown logging road that nobody uses. This is in the middle of several square miles of Federal Forest and I just squeeze my Jeep down this road. I made it to the stand with ease (I've made this trip 20-30 times) switched the card just as it started raining. It became a downpour and so I ran back to my Jeep but after 2-3 minutes of running I realized I was completely lost. This was very crazy because I knew this area so well but the bit of rain changed everything. It took me almost an hour to find my way back. My cell phone couldn't get data service to bring up the GPS and I had left my pack with my compass in the Jeep because of the short walk. I couldn't have been more wrong.

For myself, I believe that this is why I come to this site. I didn't realize how complacent I had become romping around in bush since being a pre-teen. It took a good spook to shake me up and make me self cognizant of my abilities, and limitations. I don't go off the deep end with this stuff, but I do take practical knowledge/experiences seriously. I changed after I felt the feelings, and not just thought about being turned around. Glad it worked out for you buddy.

It's been awhile since I have gotten lost in the woods. I think that when I was younger I had a fear of this so I would strip bark from trees I pass. Obviously that's harmful to the trees but I didn't know any better. Most of the mountains where I roam I have a lot of service roads that run parallel with the ridge. So I either have to walk down or up and then along the road. I use to race those trails when I was in high school with my buds in our pick-up trucks, but not anymore.

If I do go to a new area then I break out the map and study the area. Then I'll bring a bigger pack with a lot more gear in it invluding a compass.
