Thought I'd get your opinions. New to sharpening with wet stones, using 400 Naniwa, 1200 Gesshin, 5000 Gesshin, 8000 Gesshin and suede/leather strop with green chromium. Thought I'd post some before pictures, the knife is pretty beaten up and then some work in progress.

Probably about three sessions, just sitting down learning holding the knife, movements, etc. Working once with 400, couple times with 1200 and 5000, once with 8000 and once with strop. My thoughts are that the stones are still in the break in period and I'm seeing results where the knife is getting an edge where before, very nicked and dull.

Just kind of fun and relaxing learning.

Does it cut stuff ?
(The dots of blood on the blade near the tip was a nice touch.)
I was going to recommend a pain carbon steel to learn on rather than stainless but you don't seem to be having probs with the bur.
are you happy with it ?

Didn’t notice the dots till you pointed itout. Cuts notebook paper, didn’t have phone book paper. Im happy with it so far, im not good with pictures but in hand it looks better.

Tried s90v today, doesn’t cut paper well but didn’t before i started. On a high point, i kept the bevel even. So from an easy steel to one of the hardest, definately see a difference.

Looking good! I find it helpful to make sure to get a good bur before moving onto the next stone. I’ve never tried S90V but sharpened my first 14C28N blade this past weekend and was really happy with the results. Keep up the good work.

Thanks. Got this idea floating through my head to try each steel that I currently have, see where they sit. The 14C28N is the only knife I have with that steel, the only Kershaw. I have two S30V, several 20CV, several M490 and two S90V. I'd like to see the differences between the 30, 20 and 490.

You can see where I'm making some progress with the M490 but still have work to do.
