So here is my two week old Sebenza that I've already started making changes to. Can't leave well enough alone.

I filed down the thumbstud and polished the anodizing off of the stud and backspacer. I also scotchbrited the scales.

What I would love to do next is give the blade a hand rubbed finish. Has anyone attempted this? The tricky part would be working around the thumb stud I imagine, but otherwise it should be straight forward.

The horror!

Do what makes you happy, I love the thumb lug that comes with the knife. The worn handle finish is pretty popular, and looks good after it gets scratched up a bit.

Hand rubbed finish on the blade? I would like to see how that looks, I don't think anyone has done it. I would tap the thumb lug out with a punch and rub the blade, then send it back to CRK to get it reinstalled. You would get a better, more even look that way.

Is there any way to reinstall the stud myself? I believe it is press fit, correct. Couldn't I press it/tap it back in maybe with a little blue loctite to keep it in place?

Maybe, I don't honestly know.

Yes you can press it back in, I have done it, no need for the loctite it will stay in place, no problem.

Great to know. I think I'll try it!

Now, who wants to tell me the best way to do a hand rubbed finish :)

I used a vice, to press it out and to press it in, make sure to put something between the blade and the vice so you don't scratch it up though.

If you don't have a vice you can use a C-clamp as well.

interesting, i will have to try that. i have some felt padding i can use.

WOW, that looks great. I have a couple modded 21's myself. I had to send them out to be done, basically don't have the talent myself to attempt the mods.

You can polish your blade with ceramic slips. The most useful size is 1/2"X1/4"X6". Get about 6 different grits starting at about 150 and going up to about 1500. Push the coarsest stone back and forth with the 1/2" edge laying on the blade. The axis of the stone should be 45 degrees to the axis of the blade. Use 409 cleaner for lubricant. Soon your slip will acquire a point. Hold the stone 45 degrees above the table. Turn the slip over from time to time to keep the edge centered. After you have a nice uniform coarse scratch pattern all over your blade, move on to the next finest stone. This stone is held at a 90 degree angle to your first scratch pattern. Use the finer stone to obliterate the coarser scratches. Then move to the next finest stone. Be sure to rinse and/or wipe all the coarser material away before you charge into a finer grit. By the time you get to your finest slip, the scratches will be almost invisible.

I would not hand rub the blade, hand rubbed blades show all kinds of battle scars as you "use" them. The stone wash finish will stand up to daily tasks for years and years before showing any "battle scars."

The rest of the knife looks well done, I'm just a CRK purist and really like the factory look the best. I can't even flip my screws :)

Here's a hand rubbed blade done by one of the best customs makers today, Kirby Lambert. Here she is after some use... :(

IMHO it's a very nice finish, it's just not really for EDC

Looks great, I really like the hand rubbed finish and polished thumbstud and spacer. I agree with So Lo, the hand satin finish will show it all wheras the tumbled blade won't. That being said, satin looks very cool and S30V produces a nice satin finish.

Matt Cuchiarra hand satined my blade when I sent him my Large Regular for a pimp job. It came out extremely nice, but I must admit that it makes me nervous to use the knife. I don't want to scratch the beautiful finish.

Looks pretty good! Don't have the heart to alter such original characteristics, but definitely an eye looker.

Thanks for sharing, definitely gives some inspiration.
