A friend who does volunteer work saw my knives and asked me to make her a nice one. I had been letting her and her husband try out my experiments for feedback since they love to cook. She said she had saved $100. I was busy and didn't think about it and the next year she told me that she had saved $200 and thought she could help me out since I was having health problems. Her husband was going through cancer and she wanted a anniversary gift. I couldn't say no and told her I would just make her one but she said I had to take the money. I figured that the right thing to do was spend the money on the knife. I got some Damasteel but we were in the middle of Covid and I couldn't use my oven at my rental and there were big delays for heat treat. M matt Gregory offered to do it for me and then donated a amazing piece of Koa. my health crashed and we moved again but I finally got it together. Generosity to a stranger definitely pays it forward. I hope Matt can collect on it someday.

After all the setbacks and delays. So many times I would tell them it was coming and end up with a delay with a scratch or something or realizing that to fill all the pores would take several coats of oil slurry to fill the pores. I sent it to them with USPS and had a crazy experience where it went to another state fortunately to a business who sent it back then was returned to sender with a bill. I didn't have to pay the bill at least. Then I got in the car to take it to UPS and got in a accident. then when they received it the husband had to be taken to the hospital for kidney stones. This thing might be cursed. I'm not sure if I will work with Damasteel for awhile.

I screwed up several times especially on the handle so now it's super sculpted. The belly is a zero edge and cuts like crazy. My feelings wouldn't be hurt if someone gave a critic. I is supposed to be a light thin cutter though. It was 2.75 oz.

Outstanding work! My wife is counting out $200 right NOW!! 😋 Seriously, I can't think of a single criticism of this knife. Sorry it came with so many hiccups in the final mounting and delivery, but at least all the bad juju is gone and no one has to cut themself on it to appease the knife spirits. Thanks for this story.

Talked to his wife and we agreed that we it's a bad idea to let the knife near him until the stone comes out:D

Other than the damasteel being muddy it is a nice knife overall.
To really get damasteel to pop take it to a mirror polish then etch in warmed muratic acid ( the masonry strength not swimming pool.)Make sure it is super clean before etching as any contaminants will show up in the etch.

Oh boy. Where were you when I was trying to get it to come out. I was worried about using muratic in my rental and someone said it was possible to do it with ferric. Since it bit deep I thought it was good to go but I couldn't get it nice and sharp. I ended up doing several re-etches and finally called it good because it was getting to deep. The coffee "etch" didn't stick as well as I thought it should. Since it looked like better contrast on camera I thought maybe I was expecting to much or that somehow I just didn't know what I was doing (I was right). Since it was more or less a gift and the wife wanted it gone and for me to stop showing it to her I decided to give up and call it a learning experience and, well, I guess it was. I guess that's why the directions say to use muratic. Hey at least I read them before I didn't follow them.

That Matt fellow is, indeed, a beauty. And a good friend. (For a $hithead, of course, in case you're reading. :D)
I also want to point out that I don't know him and I don't think we even talked. I had just messaged a few times on Instagram since he also lives in upstate NY. I just asked him for help because I didn't have any options at the time. When he finished he wouldn't even let me pay for cost and then tossed in the nicest piece of wood I have worked with. I guess in my mind when someone does stuff like that they probably aren't worst human being in the world.

He is, indeed, a very good guy. I am not surprised of your story of his kindness at all. He has done equivalent stuff for me, and we've been friends for well more than a decade. It was nice of you to mention him for his kindness.

Knife looks nice! +1 for M.Gregory, hell of a guy.
