My problem with Sebenza's

Well I've been thinking bout how to write this...here goes.

It wasn't that many years ago that I could be pleased with $20/$15 or even a $10 blade every once in a while. My knowlege and tastes stepped up the natural progression many of you know. For the last cpl. years I tend to buy blades with increased frequency but now in the better lines of what benchmade and spydie tend to offer as well as occassional 'special'

blade. Yea I've held a friends Sebenza...and cycled them at a few shows. My problem is if I take the plunge for a Sebie will my buying habits continue to escalate....cause my knife budget does NOT include a $300 blade every month. If I thought it was going to be my ultimate folder I'd just go get it.....but somehow I just know that its only going to up the ante on getting my fix for a new blade. Any of you sebie owners out there that were 'regular buyers' that got a benza to stop that need for NEW blades. Just wondering.

Yeah, I bought a small Sebenza to stop my non auto. folder habit.

Then I bought a large Sebenza and have a plain Umfaan and a small wood inlay on order.

I also know what my fifth Sebenza will be.

IMHO, you are hooked.

Hello All,

Well, first of all let me just say that.....I am not a folder person!!!!!! I have either owned or handled some of the best!!! I don't know why, but I just cannot get into folders.... I have owned one Synergy, and handled quite a few Sebenza's, but I just have not been that impressed with any of them.... Maybe I am just a freak of nature!!! Who knows?????

I do own two folders that I do like.... The first is my BF Blue Spyderco Native (plain edge, of course), but the one that I really love, and it is due mainly to the awesome craftsmanship of the maker, is a Kit Carson Custom!!! I tell you what guys, if you like very high quality folders, you owe it to yourself to get one of Kit's blade's..... Like I said I don't even like folder's, but this one has definantly got my attention..... Now if I could just talk Kit into making me an awesome fixed blade, I might just have the PERFECT knife!!!!!

Gene

Course on the other hand, I don't get into fixed blades myself, don't even own 1.

I'll take the opposite tack here, I think this Sebenza will curb my need to buy knives. I really use all of my knives, and I guess I really don't have that many in comparison to a lot of the forumites I see posting. So yes, buying a $300 knife every month won't work unless I'm selling a $300 knife every month, but then it's like getting a new car every year. You lose so much in the "Showroom Value" department.

I do have my eye on a couple of way out customs, but I'm not decided. I mean I'd probably have to have them framed to keep me from carrying and using them. I am hopefully going to get a d/a auto (or two) that have been talked about a lot in the auto forum, but that will tide me. It's so much fun to carry and use the Sebenza, that it satisfies my craving, and lets me window shop with peace.

Understand completely, pretty soon $400 dollar knives don't sound so far out of reach and makes sense to own one, doesn't it? After that you have some money saved up and you start to look around the internet a little, like on say KnifeArt.com, he has a neat little way of displaying the selections he has to offer;

Folders Under $500
and of course
Folders Above $500

When you start just clicking on the second option there you know you're headed for trouble.

So it sounds like you are a wise person, but me thinks it may be too little too late.....

Go for it and have fun. Before you know it you will be selling the ones you bought last year or last month, to buy your next beauty. For me the hunt is even more fun than keeping the last one you bought.
Dave.

Gotta agree with the King. Bought my Sebenza last August and have yet to purchase a folder since (have one ordered though). IMHO it would take something pretty special to one-up a Sebenza. I've seen more than a few pretenders but no serious contenders.

It's only a mistake if you fail to learn from it!

Been away from the keypad for a while...gotta say you guys make me laugh...and think.

Rick..yes I'm sure I'm hooked..just trying to keep it in check...not always easy.

GeneL..I wish I didn't like folders either...then I would have no probem with this affliction.

Copfish...I guess the upside to this escalating curve is maybe eventually I'll have less total items to deal with but maybe more of a few choice ones...not a bad option.

GaryG..sounds like an old proverb..too soon too olde...too late too smardt or something like that.

Anyway I'm glad I haven't caught the dreaded, sometimes permanent malady and psychosis of Sebenzanitis. Tis one of those maladies surely longlived and costly to battle, at times with no cure but those that have it seem to learn to live and deal with the infirmity. Personally I know I have no problem YET...I just take it one day at a time.

Oh, having a preference for fixed blades doesn't solve anything. There are a lot more custom fixed blades available out there (they are simpler to make, since there is not 'mechanism'), and a lot of them are really purty.

Freemon, I hate to tell you, but like all of us, you're going to croak someday. One of your last thoughts will be the things you didn't do or indulge yourself trying to be "practical" and/or "economical".

You ony get one shot at this life. Indulge yourself, and as a result, enjoy yourself. Like most of us, you probably work hard for your money. You might as well reap some of the benefits and rewards of that hard work.

Besides, the better knives, regardless of which ones you get, will reward you with satisfaction and pleasure every time you use them, which is a good thing, since you'll have them and enjoy them for a LONG, LONG time.

Indulge yourself, my friend, and enjoy.
Take care.

Indulge indeed, but I have many hobbies. You can get good knives under $300, but not good bullwhips which, for the longer whips I prefer, are just starting at $350+!

I bought my Sebenza (large) about 2 years ago, and have to admit I've been happy with it ever since. I haven't bought another folder either, though I just did order a new spydie Mouse (anyone got one yet?). I still carry most of my other folders from day to day, but when I'm working around the farm or out in the woods, its always the Sebenza that comes along!

Like most of you I enjoy shopping for and buying new toys from time to time, knives included, but I have had to shake the fog from my brain at some point and realize that I already have an appropriate knife for every mission I could possibly imagine getting into, so now its on to other things...

Bullwhips! didn't think anyone was into them anymore! I have an old one from 1972, 14 footer that really packs a whallop! Keeps the kids in line pretty well.
Glad to see I'm not alone in this other hobby! Where do you get your whips at?

I have to admit that while I definately think that the Sebenza raised the bar for me in terms of how much I'll spend for a knife, it was the DA-Socom that really took me over the edge.
The Socom, the Sebenza, and the Synergy (especially the IPO's) are all what I consider production/custom and IMHO are worth every penny. They perform, they hold their value, and they are a joy both to use and to behold. Now if I could only find an IPO Synergy tanto with a black or burgandy handle, I could stop this mad obsession and be satisfied.

PS-my new large and small Sebenzas with dual-thumbstuds and polished blades should be arriving any day!

Once the Sebenza Barrier is broken, the price of your knives go up quickly.

The next step is customs. Then all is lost and there is no hope. Do not buy that Sebenza.
