I like that kit, very practical with lots of quality components. Did you pick a .22 cal pistol for food procurement?

Thanks, primarily for food, yep. Some CCI shotshells and some CB rounds and regular 22 ammo mixed in.

"1 box Strawberry Jello" - that's a first for me. Is it high in sugar content?

A throwback from my SAR kit. Very high in sugar. Especially useful for people suffering from hypothermia or diabetics if conscious. Hot sweet liquids easily and quickly absorbed for energy if hypothermic, quick raise in sugar levels if hypoglycemic.

KR

I should also point out that the pistol isn't a mandatory carry item but it will fit in this bag very nicely as it was designed to do. Also I have a permit for both states that it is most likely to be used in. Just to keep the i's dotted and the t's crossed. :D

Any other comments welcomed. Kind of suprised there is no comment on the radio, especially considering how useful it can be. There must be some other suggestions?

I would add the ability to carry more water. A 2 liter bladder could be rolled up and stored.

I'm curioius about this. Are you referring to Jello Gelatin and if so is it regular Jello or the Sugar-free variety? I dont see using the regular type for diabetics as it has no sugar in it? At least with the Sugar-free it has sugar substitue. I may be way off on this, but from what I've understood about diabetes is the regulation of sugar due to the lack of or over load of sugar in the body.

Edit: And as to the 2 liter rollup bladder, yeah not a bad idea or you can use one of these: http://www.bestglide.com/water_bag.html This is a 2 gallon rollup bag.

You are correct. You need to make sure that you don't get the sugar free gelatin. The gelatin that I carry has 19grams of sugar in it.

Hypoglycemia is low blood sugar. Using sugar will revive them. If they have hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) then it won't help

Thanks for the URL to the water bag.

hi kr1, great kit!

i could be mistaken, but i don't see the following things, unless i misunderstood what you want from the kit:

wire saw (in addition to leatherman saw)
signal mirror (perhaps one of the compasses has a mirror?)
fishing kit (hooks, line, sinkers, etc)
1-foot sq. heavy-duty aluminum foil (can be used for all kinds of stuff, shaped into an emergency bowl, etc)
tea light/small candle (easy way to keep a flame going)
sunblock

Is this a PSK, or a camping kit?

Looks pretty comprehensive, it would see you through alot of situations id guess.

Thanks tka. I don't really like wire saws. Maybe I just have never used the right one but I don't think they are that useful. Any suggestions as to the right one to get?

I do have a signal mirror just wasn't in the picture.

Fishing kit?? All the places I spend most of my time I never see fish. I probably should include a rudimentary fishing kit though.

Aluminum foil. Thanks. I did forget about that.

I have small candles that are included in the kit.

Sunblock and oh yea, DEET. Thanks, I forgot.

Thanks again for the list.

Yeah, I agree its a fine line. If I added my hammock and some more food it would be a camping kit. :D

I am curious Why two Antennas for the radio. Plus since i know very little about radios I am Curious, What band width, is it a HAm radio, Do you need a licence

Im not asking for chapter and verse, just a quick rundown on what you got.

Yes, it is an amateur radio commonly referred to as a ham radio. It is a Yaesu FT-50 and it normally transmits in two bands. 2 Meters and 440MHz and receives just about all frequencies from 500khz to 800Mhz (ballpark). This one has been modified so it can transmit on many other frequencies/bands including FRS/GMRS and many police and ems/fire frequencies. I SHOULD POINT OUT THAT I NEVER USE IT THAT WAY. There is nothing illegal in modifying this radio to do this. Just in using it out of the standard bands. There are exceptions in the FCC rules for this in matters of life and death and serious injury. Fines, confiscation, loss of license and even jail time can result if the FCC doesn’t agree with you about how serious the emergency is. The roll up antenna that can be seen at the top of the picture rolled up in the zip lock to the left of the Nalgene bottle is just a much better antenna than the standard antenna at transmitting and receiving. I have used this radio on the amateur bands in the Adirondacks and the White mountains and gotten messages back home during week long trips. In places that cell phones never work. On the ham bands you do need a license. None of the licenses require knowledge of Morse code any more and the technician license (the one required to operate this radio) is the first license you would need and is pretty easily gotten. There is a lot of information out there and if you are interested in getting your license. There are also things like satellite communication (seriously) which I have used this radio to do and APRS which is also very useful for tracking assets in SAR activities. It definitely can be a handy little tool in a survival situation.

Hope I didn’t over do it. :D There is a lot more.

I am a repair technician by trade (part time these days...). Mostly business band UHF / VHF.

If there's one thing I've learned, it's not to argue antenna theory with a Ham radio user (unless you want to get verbally beat up for a few hours :)

Did you make that jpole? Out of 300 ohm? Do you have a pic of it unraveled?

I'm spoiled i guess, I have a Globalstar at my disposal because we're a dealer. Tough I have NEVER wanted to take it, I just dont get that far out in the wild :( It just goes to show how easily I forget to to the simple route.
