When I went with Uncle Ethan to PWYP last year, one of the new delights to be experienced was ramps. For those who don't know, ramps are like a cross between an onion and garlic. They are also called wild leeks. Anyway we got into a whole mess of them and I saved a few and brought them back to Iowa for planting. I planted them in the shade in my back yard where it is nice and cool.

I am hoping they will be fruitful and multiply, but they came up just fine this year in the back yard.

If you're curious about PWYP, here is the first in a series of 5 videos about the trip. Somewhere in there it shows how to cook ramps.

mmmm I miss the ramps from when I lived in minnesota, now up here in pei canada, the fiddleheads are just starting to look good. I don't know if there are ramps here yet but the clams and seaweeds make up for it. But I still love me some ramps.

Where in Minnesota did you find ramps? I might have to go on a foraging trip up there. As far as I know, my ramps are the only ones growing in Iowa. I've never seen them in the woods.

dammin, i want ramps

i might have them, but they look so much like lily of the valley and false lily of the valey (which are DEADLY poisonous)

mmm

Ramps!!! Yummy. Plentiful were I'm from. Be careful though, if you eat too many your wife might make you sleep in the other room.

Hear me now and listen to me later (Saturday Night Live reference), but any interaction you have with Uncle E will be enormously educational to you and your progeny. Ethan Becker is a historically important figure. Now, knowing Uncle E just a little bit, he would be very uncomfortable with this description. Mr. Becker is the most down to Earth and humble person you would ever meet, but he is historically important. I have learned so much from him, Moose, Brian, Bladite, Crazy Mustache Sniper (my really good friend Sam Hensley ((who has been somewhat missing lately))), Biscuit, Erik (forget user name), Derek and ALL of the other people who I have met through EB, you REALLY have to get to one of these meets. Seriously, this is the real deal. I have met, but he doesn't remember me, none other than Jerry Fisk through Ethan. If you were to go to PWYP you would meet Terrill Hoffman, James Nowka, Scaaty Lobo and none other than Special Forces Dave. Not to mention you would meet all of the other characters who have enriched my life so much - one example would be Navy Bill. My god. Get out there and experience this! Approach it with an open mind. Consider yourself to be the least at a gathering and open your mind to all those you would encounter. I know I'm forgetting someone and I'm really sorry but I'm stupid and average.

Average Iowa Guy

When I clicked on this I thought it was going to be some kinda 7, 9, 10 or 12 deramping tutorial...Guess I was wrong :).

Nowka and SF Dave were at this latest gathering. :)

Just rip one up and give it a smell.....I recently read somewhere (not sure how accurate it is so dont take my word for it--lol) that there is nothing poisonous that imitates the onion smell. So if you are in the bush and happen to come across a plant that smells like an onion, its safe to eat.....I havent tried that out yet:D
