I have never worn a knife like this before. I'm so excited I thought I would post a couple pics.

Looks good. In reference to the break point in the cord, that really isn't a bad idea. I much prefer cord over a chain, but I've been trying to think of a way to put a break point in it.

I was wondering if the burnt portion of the cord was where he fused the ends together. This would break long before the rest of the cord.

You can remove the inner strands of the 550 cord and run a beaded dog tag chain through the outer sheath of the cord. Use the last inner strand to pull the chain though. this will leave a weak point incase it gets hung up or grabbed. just leave a gap in the cord at the ends.

Let us know how it works out for you. I would think it's a bit too heavy to be comfortable worn on the neck..

the fused part does break way sooner than the cord, the join is pretty strong but its also quite brittle so it can crack and disintegrate.

I am definitely going to redesign this with a weak point.

dont wanna get lynched...

I was just thinking of something similar. Good idea TDC. Mrs S was wrong, you are good for something. :D

:D I guess if your falling from a tree or running thru thick brush you may want a break away safety thingy :p
or just use a beaded chain.... ;)
I am hanging by my neck, what am I going to do ? Oops I forgot the RC3 is right there...
Something I have yet to encounter is someone hanging by a neck knife... safety can be overated at times, each there own ...

TTD always the voice of reason..but..If youd like that margin of safety here is one option.Much more comfortable than just the chain.

My activities might be more prone to the danger or dangly things. I've personally seen the necklace of a guy get sucked into the fan of a running engine when he was trying to find the bad sparkplug wire. Good thing it broke cause I don't think his face would have stopped the motor.

Lots of power tools and machinery can be a problem, that's why they use the breakaways on ID tags.

If you're attacked, even if you have the knife, grabbing the necklace gives someone a lot of control over your body.

Fall out of a tree or down a steep hill and catch something on the way down.

I was running full tilt down a hill once and got clotheslined across the throat by a wire used to train grapes. It didn't kill me but my feet where level with my head for a bit. I can imagine it would feel about the same to catch a branch with a strong necklace.

I use a lathe a couple times a week, that can kill you instantly (you can look up photos on the internet, I don't feel like loosing my breakfast)

I know it's not an everyday occurrence but why wouldn't you make a weak point? It doesn't have to fall apart, just make it break at like 10lbs, would hurt but you'd make it :D

Sorry for the long post, I just wanted to mention this so people know that there is a danger.

I make break links by putting the two ends of the cord into a piece of shrink tubing and shrinking it down with a match. If the cord gets hung up the ned of the cord just pulls out.

Cool setup ,I like the heat shrink tubing idea wildmike .What about the bead chain and heat shrink tubing that would make a clean looking strong yet breakaway neck lanyard if you put the heat shink over the ends of the paracord and cover the bead chain.

It's interesting what different people prefer. I hated the paracord, it always felt abrasive to me plus it looked out of the ordinary IMO. I found the chain rolls over my skin smoothly and is very comfortable to the point that I can't even feel it anymore. It doesn't hold dirt and grime plus I figure anyone who sees it will just assume I'm wearing dog tags.
For those of you that are tactical in nature and don't like reflectiveness, black ball chain can be found.

This picture reminded me of one more thing I've found. With either cord or chain, if you run it through two holes in the sheath instead of one (you'll have to drill new ones in the RAT Izula sheath), the sheath will stay oriented the same way at all times instead of twisting around between left and right handed draws.
