My RC Super Cub and J-3 Cub...

After my son Travis got his first RC plane for Christmas last year, I decided I would get one and learn how to fly. I thought it would be fun to be able to have a hobby (besides knives :D ) that we could do together, while he is still young enough to want to do things with Dad..

The yellow and white Super Cub started out as white and blue. A couple weekends ago, I crashed it hard and broke the fuselage and prop, so I decided I would do a little painting and brighten it up. The only thing I have done to the yellow J-3 Cub is add bigger tires and a steerable tail wheel.

Both planes have a wingspan of approx. 4 feet and a radio control range of over 1/4 mile. They are a lot of fun. Now if spring would actually get here, and the winds would die down, we could spend a lot more time flyin.

Feel free to add pics of your RC planes, helis, cars, or boats.

56 years ago I got my first airplane ride in a J3 Cub. I like real Cubs and model Cubs of all kinds. My son's first control line model was a Cub. Those are Sweet! Happy flying!

I've always wanted an RC plane. They look like so much fun and I love watching people who know what they're doing fly them.

However, I would fear for the safety of every building around me if I tried to fly one. Even if there were no buildings in sight, I'd manage to some how find one and crash right into it. In my hands, it seems like a very expensive hobby.

Enjoy it though, it does seem like a lot of fun.

It really is a lot of fun. I can see being nervous about buildings. I was too the first time I flew. Its really the trees you have to watch out for. Those things are like a magnet for airplanes. We have a big vacant area we fly in. It was going to be a subdivision, but they never built houses on it. Its nice though because the street is in, so we have a great runway.

Unfortunately I'm still going through a learning curve, and today I learned something...
I don't know exactly how windy it was, but I do know it was TO windy :D.

After repairing the super cub from the crash a couple weeks ago, I couldn't stand it anymore, so my son and I went flying today.

I wasn't going to try it because we had some strong gusts, but I did anyway.
It took off great and got some elevation, and I started making a turn when the wind started gusting really hard. I tried to complete the turn and land it, but it was so strong it just took it to the ground. Hard... :( It happened so fast, I'm not sure, I may have given to much input on the controller too, making it worse.

It broke the fuselage in the front this time, broke the new propeller, one of the wing struts, and upon further inspection it also broke loose a component on the receiver.

I've got it apart and re soldered the electronics, and will fix the fuselage tonight.
Hopefully tomorrow will be a little less windy, and we can go out again.

The first time you take off and have a successful flight, it is a really great feeling. I would encourage anyone to try it.
