Just wanted to share my companions. I just retired these, and bought a Victorinox Hiker. These knives have been very useful. Some functions I used many times- Large and Small blades. I always had to cut something. Eventually, both tips broke off. So, I used them as screwdrivers. It worked well, but I needed a tip. So, I ground both down. The scissors- once again, I always needed to cut something. If I had a thread or somthing small, it worked well. The metal piece that made the scissor blades move just broke to. I never used the fruit cutter. I also used the file tip as a screwdriver. Was never good for hefty screws, but usually did the job. The file was rarely used, also. Ok, on to the Buck 309. I carried this if I forgot the swiss. This has seen much use to. I bought it at a garage sale, almost brand new. The grips are so worn that there is little texture left. The tips have been ground slightly. The knife holds an edge superb. Just wanted to say by to some old friends.

I know how you feel about that Buck. It's one of the older 300 series of knives made for Buck, by Camillus. I have a 307 and a 311 (also by Camillus) that I love. The blades in these knives were 440A and, as I've been very happy to see, they take a very fine edge. They really did it well.

I agree. I didn't know Camilus made them for Buck. Interesting. I really like that new Victorniox soldier and the Buck Vantage. I might have to buy them.

The older 300 series Bucks, and their origins at Camillus, are discussed frequently over in the Buck Knives sub-forum. LOTS of good things to be learned there, and a very interesting place to hang out, too.

The 'newer' 300 series (like the very popular 301 stockman), are now produced by Buck, using their 420HC steel. Those knives also have a great reputation, based on all I've heard. The newer knives come with a sabre-grind on the blades (the Camillus-made knives were all flat grinds, so far as I know).
