My SAK Classic is in a sticky situation.....

My superglue leaked in my EDC pouch today and my sak classic's scissors are now glued shut. The moment I realized this had happened, I rushed over to the store to pick up some nail polish remover. I let the knife soak in the solution for about an hour and when I came back to it, the scales were really soft and peeled off the liners. So now I have a super slim SAK classic, but the scissors are still glued shut. Has this happened to anyone before? Does anyone have any ideas of how I could loosen the scissors?

Thanks,
orangish ducktape

Acetone is what we use at work to remove superglue.

I think just get yourself a new one, or one of the used ones on the 'bay for very little money. I really like my Classic. I hope you fix or replace yours.

I thought that some ducktape would be at fault, but then read the post :D. I would buy an Alox one, becaus they are soon to be discontionued.

I'm no expert chemist, but I'm guessing that just about anything reactive enough to dissolve set super glue will also do a job on steel. And probably eat away the steel much faster than the glue....good thing SAKs are cheap. Did you try googling solutions for your particular brand and type of glue? Chances are the maker of the glue knows something we don't; check if they have a website.

There is a remover specifically made to dissolve cured cyanoacrylate glues. No it is not acetone. Organic solvents may ruin the plastic scales but they won't hurt the metal unless they are chlorinated.

No surprise the scales peeled off. Cellidor is a legacy material that's used for the sake of tradition. As a plastic, it's far behind the times, susceptible to many solvents, even plain old alcohol will make them dissolve.

At this point, it's not even worth fixing. Assuming you do get everything freed up, a set of replacement scales are available, but would likely cost more than a whole new Classic.

I'd also say gasoline, does the scissors still deploy or are they glued into the body of the knife? Can you hang the tool in such a way that only the scissors are submerged into whatever solvent you go with? I'd soak the blade for a bit then try to dig out between the blades with something very thin then try to soak the blade again.. possibly removing some of the partially dissolved glue and allowing your solvent of choice to penetrate more.

Or just buy a new one, that seems like a lot of work now that I'm thinking about it.

So it turns out cured superglue will burn. I just held it under a candle for a few minutes and I started to hear crackling and I noticed that the glue had started to burn.

Given that you get the super glue off, send it back to Victorinox and they will probably repair it. My friend's wife dropped his SAK in the toilet so she boiled it to sterilize it and ruined the scales. He sent it back in and it came back repaired. John

If Victorinox won't fix it, you could fit new wooden scales. Just shape them and glue them on with you-know-what. You could find a small piece of some exotic wood and consider this an upgrade.

Nope, not at all.
But the plastic handle scales may get ruined.
