...well my wife just called me a little while ago to tell me my order from swiis-knife.com just showed up!!! only took two weeks to show up (from switzerland), even with the free economy shipping!!! (thats service!!!) :)

I bought two victorinox swiss army knives yesterday and when I opened one the handel wasn't smooth it is textured and kind of dull looking. The bottlr opener/regular scredriver blade also has a small hump on the hinge that makes it almost like a lock back.I hand't heard about any changes with the knives but I guess its progress.I still like the smooth handles better.Has anyone else noticed these alterations? es-31vp is printed on the package where it usually states the name of the model.

I had ordered the watch model, its not here yet, by the way I also ordered the sak book with that too! The order I did get yesterday was for three of the pioneers with a saw blade!!! I had ordered three slip pouches to match, unfortunatley they sent me the wrong ones, but they did say they are going to send the right ones at no charge. I also ordered a few different of the knife chains that they had. Good for not loosing your knife on hikes!!! they use these in europe, but the only thing you can find here thats close is the leather knife leash with hook.

oh by the way, its a great knife tool combination (pioneer)!!! The timekeeeper should be here any day!!!

:D right now I have my pioneer on a knife chain, with one of my black leahter pouches (I make out of Italian leather!!), temporarily until I get the right ones! :D

It sounds like you got the "economy" nylon handle scales instead of the basic cellidor handles. I personally prefer the nylon. The nylon is almost indestructible.

I got the knives at Lowe's home improvement.they were a clearance item,$7.98 a piece.they are on a small cardboard package covered with a plastic shell and are marked ES-V13P.it is a 13 function knife.no model name listed.the handles are not what I am used to,kind of rough texture, the quality seems fine just different handles.weird.

SAKS are great, don´t leave home without one, The one I want is the Pioneer with saw and the regular implements from the soldier unfortunatly it´s not easy to import them into Mexico.

As far as I know there are three versions of plastic scales in Victorinox, the standard, the translucent and the economic (dull), I think the plastic scales are the weak point of SAKS with the dull ones being a bit tougher. I wish they made more aluminum models.

I once saw a site on the net of someone who would rehandle the SAKS with bolsters and bone slabs like traditional folders, they looked fantastic, unfortunaltley he didn´t do it commercially and I´ve lost the link.

Ive done quite a few!!! you can do osage orange, african walnut, maple burl, derseert ironwwod, jigged bone, or smooth bone (honey, black, red, green, stag, imi-stag (from kovals very good imitation done in bone) ect. whatevers available). Its fairly easy though. What I do is pop off the old handles use them as a general template, and shape to fit. Polish with 400 grit, and then a little warm water with brasso and jewelers rouge mixed together with a buffing wheel on a dremel (and epoxy on with plastic weld epoxy, or 2 ton waterproof epoxy).

I would like to see more Alox handled models too.
Do the economy models have the tweezer and toothpick?

Paul

Yes the economy ones do have the tweezer and toothpick.

rev_jch,

I´ve done a few in wood, but this guy actually dissasembled the knife, replaced the rivets and rebuilt the handles completly with nickel silver bolsters and all. Once I took an old Wenger apart, replaced the fish scaler with a saw from another knife and put in new brass rivets, it came out fine, maybe I´ll try something more complex one day.

Your definately right about the rough handled sak's being tougher.Every old style handled sak that I've had the handles have always warped leaving ugly gaps.I only buy the rough one's now.Regards Joe.

I have one of the models from Lowe's & like it . I gave a few away for Christmas presents. The model from Lowe's appears to be like the Tinker model. I have been carrying & using mine everday since a few weeks before Christmas & it has not failed yet. The "economy" handles on the knife actually are SLIGHTLY easier to hold on to. If I had it to do over, I would have bought several for future gift occasions.
