Greetings sharp ones,
After securing an OT shift at the hospital and then a day off, I went to the NCCA in Stamford, CT today. Now I don't know about you but I like to make solo outings such as this a bit of an adventure, so I opted to leave the car at home and hopped (not really, I had my tickets, but "hopped" just flows better) two trains to get from Yonkers, NY to Stamford, CT, then walked two miles to the hotel that hosted the show. I took me 2.5 hours to get there but it was a beautiful day and my paunch could use the exercise. I had a budget of $200 so I knew I was probably going to get one or two nice production knives, and get a chance to view and put my greasy prints on some customs.

This year the show was not as full, both in attendance as well as tables as last year. The buzz was that the knifemakers and purveyors felt the show is not as adequately promoted as it could be. There was plenty to see, feel and buy.

There is this one seller that sells both high and mid-range prodos for near internet prices and occasionally some hot deals. This was my first stop. I picked up a Spyderco CXO3S Experimental for forty bucks (it looks like a Calypso Jr. with Micarta scales). Then I cruised the aisles. The mode of the dealers sell slip-joints and usually I only give each of those tables a cursory gander. Well I sall this saw this Sunfish? style two blader at one table that I liked so I asked, and he said fifteen bucks, I said sold.

There is this one dealer there that always gives me a dishonest vibe. He had a nice Obenauf, a large one with blue micarta scales, satin bolsters and a drop-point. I remember last couple of days reading a post about "what's your smoothest folder?" I had to check it out, well whoever said Obenauf is right. Anyway I asked the price and he said "$475, it's an Ostermeyer, he gets $700 for them." I think he was stretching the truth a bit.

I spotted a dealer who had a BM 630 on display. On my way over there I passed a table upon which was a beautiful pipe tomahawk. So I stopped and checked it out. The maker is ABS MS Raymond L. Smith. I glanced to my left and I saw it, an awesome forged and fileworked rairoad spike knife, for sixty dollars!? I quickly forked over the cash and after a nice conversation. walked off with a great knife and a huge smile. The BM 630 was cool too.

My last acquisition was a slightly used Spyderco PE Viele for sixty five. Overall a nice haul. Now if a kind Gold member will allow me to email them a pic, this long post will be worthwhile. Thanks for your time.

I would have like going this year, but personal situations have prevented me from doing so. Bummer.

Raymond Smith's prices were so good you felt like you were practically stealing from him. I saw that railroad spike knife too on his table too, almost bought it but opted for his rendition of a Marble's Woodcraft instead.
