My Sebbie needs your help

The pivot on my Sebbie was getting loose everyday. I could tighten it past finger tight and it would last longer, but it made the blade open tough so I put a little Blue Loctite on it and got her "just right". Now a week later I go to break it down for a good cleaning, and I can not break the loctite. :grumpy: I have tried heat from a solder gun, still no dice. The pivot is smooth on the other side so I can't get a good grip on it. I even put a rubber grabber thing-a-ma-jig ( used for opening stubborn jars ). Still can not break it free.

I know somebody will say Sebbies don't need any loctite. Yeah yeah yeah, mine was loosening up everyday..............................................;) Loosen to the point that the screw would fall off.

I would rather not send it off, but will if needed.

Are there any other tricks to breaking blue loctite? I was thinking of just cutting a slot in the backside so I could keep it from spinning. Does CR send out parts, or are they funny like that? If I slotted the backside I would order a new pivot screw and barrel if possible.

You might try inserting the Hex/Torx tool into the screw head and "gradually "heating the tool with a soldering iron. Hold the tool in place with a small ViceGrip, periodically checking tension to see if it breaks free. This has worked for me on numerous occasions on removal of scope bases/rings that were installed using the improper grade of loctite. Just be patient.
To avoid future problems try Loctite #222 (purple) which is made for #2 thru 1/4" fasteners.
Good luck

Thanks for the tip. I will not be using the same grade as before, this is a bummer. Purple for Sebbies :thumbup::thumbup:

It sounds like sebenza was not tuned correctly at the factor, which unfortunately, seems to be happening a lot lately. The correct fix for your sebenza would probably be to lightly polish your washer to get the thickness down a bit, however I believe to do this yourself is frowned upon by CRK. Best to shoot them an email if you really want it fixed. You are not supposed to use locktite!

Put the end of the sebbie with the tightened screw in a cup of boiling water for a couple of minutes....,after that the screw should loosen right away.

Good luck.

This is where you should have contacted CRK. The bushing around the pivot screw assembly is supposed to prevent that.

I like raoul's suggestion -- the entire knife is metal, so it can't hurt. Just make sure you relube it afterwards, since I imagine the heat will melt the lube right off it.

it shouldn't be happening. did you screw in the pivot properly? the way the Sebenza is built, there is no need to tweak the pivot or put any loctite. the blade turns against the bushing, not the pivot pin. either dis and re-assemble, or send it in.

I have a Sebbie from '04 that would always work its pivot screw loose. My older ones '99-03 never had this problem. Boiling water will work and not hurt the knife.

yes, that's the whole point of the pivot bushing. Id suggest a disassembly and care reassebmly paying special attention to washer placement.

Something is not right with your knife. I tighten my pivots down firmly until they give a little squeeeeK.

I got the sebbie second hand so Im not sure what it's life was like before. I will boil the front pivot area later, if that does not get it I will send it in. You are all a huge help, thanks again.

You might want to make sure that the washers are perfectly flat. I've taken my washers and polished lightly on the ultra fine stone for my Edge pro. When I take the blade out, I only take out the pivot screw and pivot. Make sure that the bushing and the washers are perfectly flush before placing the blade back in the frame. If there is any resistance while sliding the blade back into the frame, take it out and try again. It takes a lot of patience. Any small amount of bend in the washers will cause what you are describing. The same thing happened to me with my Micarta Seb. Getting that knife working caused me a lot of grief. I even sent it back to CRK twice without getting it fixed properly. When it's done right, the pivot screw can be tightened more that finger tight with no problems. Tightening shouldn't make blade rotation more difficult. Whatever you do don't use loctite.

I still can not break it, I will ship it off in the morning. I wonder how long it might take? I figure even if I get it loose it will still need the tune up anyways.

Never use loctite on a Sebbie!

I had the exact same problem when I first got mine.

I know this sounds silly, but have you tried loosening the pivot with the blade open?

Sounds super easy, but that did it for me. After a cleaning and reassembling, it was fine and needed no loctite.
