My second GEC came today and while I really like the knife both blades have a good amount of play. I was very shocked to see this on a GEC. My first one is ROCK solid. The Burnt Stag handles are very nice to. Now my question is what should I do about the play? Send it in or return it from where I purchased it? Thanks guys.

I would have been shocked too.

I recommend that you check with the dealer that you got it from first. There's a good chance he might replace the knife himself.

I've got some minorblade play on some GEC's I usually have worked that by myself. If seller won't replace the knife or you really like the scales, you could contact GEC. They fixed my #73L without problems and all.

If the dealer has others of the same model, maybe he can check them for you to see if he has a suitable replacement. You might ask to see pictures of the stag as well. If he has one better, then that would be the easiest route to go. Failing that, send it to GEC.

I do like the handle so I contacted GEC and they just told me to send it in and they would get it all taken care of. Really fast response time for them to. I'm satisfied so far in there attempt to help me out. I have no doubt they will fix me up and the knife will be great. It is a good bit bigger than I was expecting. It's going to be a user anyway so when I get it back its going straight into my pocket. Thanks for all your help fella's.

I sent in my #73 that had some bladeplay and it took about a month to get fixed. They don't do repairs while they are in the middle of producing knives. But once they have a break the repair is very quick.

Oh well I wish she had told me that because I may have just exchanged it then if it takes that long. Thanks for the heads up mongomondo, I would really have started to worry before a month was up. I still like GEC though and plan to buy more, I know everyone makes a mistake from time to time and so a few "bad" knives will make it out the door. As long as they stand behind them, like it looks so far like they do, then I won't stop buying them. I'm really liking something in the whittler line I think. Or maybe the new White Owl with the Kryptonite handle.

I have a barlows that was sent in for work as it had some play when I recieved it. It has now been over a month so I called them and the person I spoke with stated she would have domineering work on it tomarrow for me. They have a great staff and will get it taken care of for you.

I would have to say with all the GEC's I have purchased I have had issues with only one vendor he is now 3 for 3 with defect knives.

War Eagle, I have sent in a couple knives for blade play, mostly after a bit of use. Once I sent in two knives at one time and it took a month, the other time I sent in one knife and it took maybe two weeks, nothing real serious. If I was you, I would have sent it into GEC as well. Those scales are really nice and your definitely gonna get them back. With sending it into a dealer, it's kind of a shot in the dark at getting stag as nice as the original. It may take some time, but it will be well worth it. GEC cares about their customers so they'll make it right ASAP. Great knife, sorry to hear about the play, it's a beauty.

I had a 2008 production Cigar Stockman and the main blade was so wobbly when open you could hear it clacking just by shaking it. I sent it in to GEC for repairs and got it back in perfect condition.

I have bought directly from them, and had to return two knives for service, and I was well treated every time.

I would absolutely not swap for another if you like the stag on that one.

I have purchased a number of GEC's in the last year. None have come with blade play. I usually order from the same dealer. He checks every knife he sends me for my pet peeves. Up until recently no problems. Just the other day he contacted me that he could not ship me a a particular knife. He said he already sent it to GEC for repair. BUT, he said it would be about a month due to the holiday rush and GEC's current schedule. GEC is a great company IMO but no company is perfect. You may find the dealers can be very helpful at screening your purchases :)

Nice knife BTW, I would have done the same thing if everything else was to my liking. Its an easy fix for GEC but they are busy right now from what I was told.

yes. i would be interested in hearing about the repair.
as to fixing the blade play? will they tighten the blade by peining it on a stidy?

at about 2:50 there is an image of a "Stidy" being used . i think the Brit's mean a steady or anvil for the stidy?

Sorry to hear that. I just sent my first knife into GEC earlier this month for a proud backspring. I "fixed" some side to side play on a GEC toothpick before but I probably should have sent it in. It doesn't look like it used to:o

I really like GEC. I sent one knife back to the factory for blade play. Took about 1.5 months to get it back. Had to call a couple times...each time, the staff was very nice and promised to get right on it, but they were in the middle of other projects. When I finally got the knife back, it was perfect. Worth the wait.

At the GEC price point, it is a reasonable expectation that there not be significant blade play. If it were I, I would send it back. I have several GECs and none has any blade play.

Wareagle, I like your attitude...everyone lets it slip now and then, GEC have proven that they are a class act, so there is NO doubt that they will will stand by you and their product.
Im pleased you havent opened up this thread and skinned alive GEC before they can do something for you, if you like the scales, just send the knife back and just forget about the knife...then before you know it, you will have your knife back in pristine condition, by the way, I very much like the look of the knife as well....that GEC is right up there

Thanks for the kind words everyone. I really like the 2 GEC's I've gotten so far, I missed out on the 2011 Forum knife but I do have my name in for one of the last 4, I would REALLY like to get my hands on one of these. I feel better now hearing all of your stories about their CS. I feel like my knife will make it back to me in great condition. This was my first knife with burnt stag and I liked it so I didn't really want to give it up if I didn't have to. In the future I will ask the dealer I buy from to inspect them for me before I make the purchase, learn something new all the time.

There shouldn't be any blade play. Just have your dealer swap it out. I sent one in for repair, and I was not happy when I got it back.

So now, no knife repair. Ever. It's either right or gone.

To late joe-bob, mailed it off yesterday morning. If you wouldn't mind saying why weren't you happy with your knife when it was returned to you?
